What is the guy reaching for, trying to steal? If he was a drug dealer as some of the comments on the other post suggest, I would think that the shooter knew the victim and knew what he had. If it was completely random, than that is really scary.

This spells doom for the Ponce City Market. Good Luck getting buyers, renters, business owners to occupy the space in what can be described as a war zone. A murder per week in that sector. Homeless thugs and street hoodlums litter the beltline and that area. Any day, the beltline rape/murder story will be posted. Too bad, ending before it began.

My MIDTOWN neighbor (white) was walking home from a gay bar a few months ago in that part of town. Got the living daylights beat out of him, black eyes almost a broken jaw, sore legs/hip from kicking blows from two BLACK teenagers off Ponce. Was too embarrassed to report it to the police as he would have to divulge where he was. Walk over that way AT YOUR OWN RISK. Just sayin, bro!

I've been hanging around this neighborhood (and Va Higland, Little 5 Pts, etc) since I was in highschool in the '60s. This neighborhood is MUCH better now than in the 60s, 70s and 80s. From what I have heard from my son and others who know this boy, it was no doubt a drug deal gone wrong. This could have happened anywhere in Atlanta. Get a grip. This isn't the end of anything,

Some of you people are mind boggling... I mean, seriously! DO you honestly think that anyone...especially dealers would walk around with a huge bag of weed out in plain view??? Wake up to reality... A 20 y.o. white dealer? Odds are low. Crime is high in that area...why wouldn't you think this was a random opportunistic robbery gone bad?
Steve
3:42 pm on Tuesday, November 13, 2012
Yes, Steve, carrying a bag in your hand and out in the open did exactly what it was meant to do... make you think there is no way it could be anything illegal.. and in plain view! A white dealer? Actually, back in my party days, the only dealers I knew were white. Drugs are not a race issue... but you don't see many black meth heads on any of the many PSA's on TV. So if you are saying the odds are low, then I'm placing my bet. Yes, I agree that this area has a high crime rate, but I think it's pretty clear that this murderer knew what he was after. Whether it was drugs or not remains to be seen. But, people don't generally shoot other people just to see what they have in their paper sack. But let's wait to hear the facts rather than speculate from our keyboards. The victim has died and his family and friends will grieve. Regardless of what he was murdered over, it's a tragedy to the families of the victim, the families of the perpetrator, and to our community. One died, one will spend his life in prison, and we the community will have to wear the stigma. I agree with the others in that detective work is clearly not your cup of tea. Unless you are joking or trying to be funny, you are so far out of touch that it's pointless to even try and reel you in. Stay on your porch and watch out for the scary black people. Yes, mind boggling!
Signed,
Straight married, white guy living in Midtown who loves the gays and blacks (and the rest of humankind).
Steve
3:45 pm on Tuesday, November 13, 2012
So...let me get this right. ANYONE carrying a bag in Midtown that gets robbed - should automatically be dubbed a drug dealer? Is this what you are saying?
Steve
3:48 pm on Tuesday, November 13, 2012
No. That's not even close to anything I said. What I did say is that you are so far out of touch that it's pointless to even try and reel you in. I'm happy to discuss the issue, but only if you have something sensible to say.
Steve
3:48 pm on Tuesday, November 13, 2012
And my detective skills are up for debate. There is no released evidence as of yet other than a tape that shows a guy holding a bag which could have been filled with midol for his girlfriend. A good detective doesn't jump to conclusions..which is what everyone else has done. You people are so small minded to immed jump to the one scenario and accept it as the truth. Lord.
Steve
3:57 pm on Tuesday, November 13, 2012
Obviously you didn't read what I wrote. Or if you did, you didn't understand it. I haven't jumped to any conclusions other than the fact that people don't randomly shoot people for a bag of Midol. That's called "playing a hunch" (I learned that from watching Starskey & Hutch back in the day). I'm not going to continue to translate my post for you. For you to declare that the odds are low that is was a drug crime because the victim was white and would never carry drugs in a bag out in plain view is enough to keep you out of the academy. So no, you're wrong, your detective skills are clear and I'm pretty sure you are the only one debating them.
Steve
4:02 pm on Tuesday, November 13, 2012
The part about the lower odds was directed mainly to the 20y.o. part...not the race btw... I know it's possible as I have known some that age.....but the odds are much lower than lets say, him just being an innocent bystander with a bag of grapes he just bought from kroger, and going to see his friend who lives at the lofts.
Steve
4:11 pm on Tuesday, November 13, 2012
And common sense tells me that if you're going to pull out a gun and pull the trigger, it's probably worth it in mind's eye or the thief. Whether he knew what was in the bag, or thought he knew what was in the bag, the "odds" are low that this was a random robbery and shooting. If I were on the case, I would presume that it's unlikely that someone was standing out in the parking lot with a gun, during 5:00 rush hour, waiting to see if someone walked up holding something random to steal and kill for.

I'm willing to wager it is a much greater tragedy to smiling 20 year old we see in the video and his family than the heartless thug that kills him. And yes, I'm willing to judge the families as well as one bearing more much more responsibility for raising an animal instead of a decent human being (sorry man, but no sympathy for anyone shooting someone in the back in broad daylight during a what appears to be a robbery).

We can certainly debate the % of white vs. back drug dealers....but it is absolutely pointless to even consider that black don't commit a vast majority of homicides and violent crimes in Atlanta. Sad to say its time to start profiling. And for those that cry about civil liberties, the fear of being robbed or shot is a much more important freedom .

When 90% of specific crimes are committed by a certain demographic then yes they should expect greater scrutiny. Either their community and families need to do more or it falls to govt as part of promoting the general welfare.
(And FYI the Feds do monitor specific transaction patterns and money movement for specific groups of persons).

Steve
5:10 pm on Tuesday, November 13, 2012
That statistic is probably correct. What was said, and I guess what pulled me into this, is that it was highly improbable that a white guy was a drug dealer. Or to be exact "Odds are low." Crime is crime and it's eradicated or perpetuated the same way, regardless of race. If the majority of violent crimes in Midtown are committed by young black males is indeed a fact, which it likely is, does that mean we should fear or even be cautious of young black males? Because making that correlation is faulty logic. THAT is racism dressed up as vigilance. That's all I'm saying... It was a robbery and a murder. Maybe drugs were involved, maybe not. Black, white, purple... it was a crime committed by a criminal.

So that you can agree that the majority of crime is being committed by young black males, than it just makes sense to be more cautious of them when encountered on the street. I am for sure going to be much more alert if a group of thugs with their pants hanging off their ass comes walking towards me on the street than say a group of young Asian males. If that is racist than whatever. But I'm not taking any chances.

First off, this entire thread never should have gotten to the subject of race. Nobody deserves to have their life taken away from them by another person. The city should be grieving, and not worrying about lesser things like sexual preferences, race, or age. A person lost his life today, a person that i went to school with. May you rest in peace and may your life being taken away be a learning experience for us all.

I watched both fox videos. One said shot in chest, another said back. There is no way to tell what was being stolen from the video. On a side note, how many of you have smoked weed in your life? Where did you get it? You bought it or a friend did, right? So does that mean since you were doing it you opened up the right to get shot dead? How about your son or daughter who smokes it at a party? Don't be so quick to judge. Drugs don't just magically appear. Dealers only exist because there is a demand. Legalize it and tax the heck out of it. Take out the black market and help our financial recovery.

The news media and the Mayor office have made deliberate attempts to cover up the crime in downtown and midtown. Downtown is crime ridden with thugs blatantly running and conducting business in the streets. I'm not sure how it is in MIdtown but in Downtown police talk regularly with the criminals and take the path of least resistance when it comes to curbing crime. The truth is although their numbers may have increased under Mayor Reed APD has done done VERY LITTLE to curb crime. They don't arrest people that are selling and smoking crack in the middle of downtown on city streets. They sit in their cars texting instead of doing police work. I should have voted for Norwood I'm so sickened by his stall and cover up tactics. It's coming from the top.
