APS Board Approves Portable Classrooms at Inman

Redistricting plan includes closing seven schools in the district

The fields at Inman Middle School will look a bit different next school year.

Between six and eight portable classrooms — also known as trailers — will be installed at the Virginia-Highland middle school to alleviate overcrowding.

The Atlanta Public Schools board of education approved a redistricting plan Tuesday night that includes sending students from Hope-Hill Elementary in Old Fourth Ward to Inman and adding portables on campus to create more space for classrooms.

Inman currently houses Centennial, Mary-Lin, Morningside, and Springdale Park Elementary students.

Previous proposals included a grade six academy at either Cook Elementary or Coan Middle to feed into Inman.

Parents and residents in all communities impacted vehemently opposed both plans.

Crazy - we're supposed to accept trailers at Inman and Grady forever?

No, I am not satisfied with the final redistricting plan. Trailers are a temporary solution to a permanent problem. The real solution to the over utilization at Inman Middle and the under utilization at Coan Middle is to rezone Mary Lin Elementary to Coan Middle and Jackson High. I suspect this is the plan Superintendent Davis has had up his sleeve for several weeks now and that it influenced his ultimate decision to keep Coan Middle open. If I am right about this, then kudos to Mr. Davis for setting the ground work for the most logical solution. I will advocate for this rezoning to occur as soon as Coan Middle is reopened as a Middle School.

As a Virginia -Haighlands home owner - my home is directly across the street from Inman Middle School- I am vehemently oppossed to any more trailers in this neighborhood. I am not prepared to see my home value continue to drop because I live across the street from a Trailer Park. I have supported the APS through my property taxes for decades, although I have never had children using the school system -I'd say that's enough. Create the 6th grade academy at Coan or Cook, but NO MORE TRAILERS at Inman. People want to funnel their kids to Inman but cuase it is a superior program. This is not a result of magic. The neighborhood parents made Inman what it is and the parents in the other communities can do the same. Putting the additional strain on Inman will not raise the tide for everyone. It will ultimately lead to lower standards and more problems at Inman. I will fight these tarilers any way I can. Louis Valente

Did someone force you to buy your house across from a school? Portable classrooms are a temporary solution. Whatever euphemism you think up to defend your house value I think you should think twice about the trailer park association - should you try to sell your house and leave someone elses realtor might use your words against your property.
