Atlanta Police Zone Redesign Takes Effect Tuesday

Maj. Browning says 15 to 18 officers added to handle new territory in zone 2

The Atlanta Police Department beat redesign that will add territory to Zone 2 takes effect Tuesday, Zone 2 Commander Maj. Robert Browning told NPU-A Tuesday night.

The zone will add areas of Morningside and Cheshire Bridge Road under the redesign, which will increase Zone 2's territory by three beats, Browning said. He assured the NPU that an increase in the number of officers will allow Zone 2 to handle the new areas.

He said that Zone 2 will receive 15 to 18 additional officers and that "from now until the end of February, 50 people are coming out of the academy. We're expanding the force."

Residents wanting to know which beat that home lies in can go to the APD web site, Browning said.

He said that Zone 2 continues to lead the city with a 13 percent reduction in crime for the year, close to Mayor Kasim Reed's goal for the city to have a 15 percent reduction. He said the zone had 4,400 crimes last year. Overall, the city has reduced crime by 1 percent this year, he said.
