iPhone tracking device aids in arrests of Midtown armed robbery suspects

Three men allegedly involved in early Wednesday morning Piedmont Heights pedestrian robbery arrested after being stopped in south Midtown.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, a trio of men were arrested early Wednesday morning following an alleged Midtown pedestrian robbery. Among the items stolen was an iPhone that had a tracking device that help authorities apprehend the suspects.

APD spokesperson Kim Jones that at approximately 12:30 a. m., Zone 2 units were dispatched to a pedestrian robbery at 594 Wimbledon Avenue in Piedmont Heights. When officers arrived, they spoke with a female victim, who stated that a black male wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt had pointed a silver handgun at her and demanded her belongings.

The victim, who gave the suspect her purse and iPhone, gave police a description of the suspect, as well as the vehicle he left in as being an older model grey Jeep Cherokee. One officer then stayed with the victim as another officer began to track the iPhone.

That officer soon came across the vehicle in question near the intersection of Peachtree Street and North Avenue. After a traffic stop was made, a locate signal was sent to the phone, which reportedly started making noise and was located on one of the passengers.

The victim was then transported to the scene and identified the subject, Carlos Johnson, 37, as the man who had robbed her. A subsequent vehicle search produced a silver handgun and the victim’s credit card.

Johnson, a convicted felon currently on probation, was charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during a felony.

Also charged with armed robbery were the other two suspects in the vehicle, Kelvin Gaston and Clifton Kilpatrick, both aged 23. All three were transported to the Fulton County Jail.

Watch out at Midtown Kroger, too! The employees and security guard distract you while doing self-check-out then snatch the cash-back money out of the tray!
Interestingly, the have ONLY self-check-out option in the evening - no real cashiers at night!

Security is a joke in Midtown. Thugs take the bus to our neighborhoods, commit crimes then leave the area. I am sick of it.

WOW, another iphone leading to the arrest of 3 to 5 black males. Based on iphone sales if this metric keeps up all black males will be in prison within the next 24 months. The real losers are the millions of young children growing up fatherless with the knowledge that daddy got 10 to 20 for a telephone. That's a confidence builder.

You are assuming that ALL black men are criminals. I can assure you that is not the case. And if ALL of the black males you know are criminals, then you need to hang with a different crowd.

As a black male, I am ashamed of my race not having any real pride and trying to get everything for free. We are not entitled to anything anyone else is; get off your ass and get to work! Stay in school and try to better yourself. We can't help where we were born or grew up, but we don't have to accept it for ourselves and our children.

Carlos was also arrested on 3/29/2010 for a suspended license. He has had prior felonies and was out on probation. This is clearly not a guy your "innocent" friends should be hanging out with. So your "guilty" friends put themselves in the vehicle with a known-felon and most likely witnessed and/or assisted in the armed robbery of this victim. At no point did they distance themselves from this felony and therefore are now associated with it.
If you don't want people to associate your friends with the actions of known felons, how about you tell them to stop associating themselves with known felons. If they didn't know Carlos at all, then tell them to not ride around with strangers but take the bus instead.

This is not a stereotype, these are facts:
1. The Patch article states that a passenger was holding the stolen iPhone. So one of these two "innocent" passengers has now committed a crime by accepting and holding onto known-stolen property.
2. They both knew that Carlos was getting out of the car to commit armed robbery against the victim and they did not successfully stop him.
3. Once they witnessed the felony armed robbery, they did not exit the vehicle and distance themselves from the crime. They are now considered an accessory to the crime since they did not stop it nor report it after the fact.
4. One of your "innocent" friends put the stolen iPhone in their pocket. They could have refused to take the iPhone, gotten out of the car, and called the police to report Carlos. The fact that they did not stop the robbery, they did not object to the robbery, they harbored stolen goods, and they did not report Carlos to the police, makes them just as guilty as the one who points the gun at the victim.

While we white people are not explicitly stating that we are better than your friends, we the readers, are stating that we are not out there committing armed robbery, holding stolen goods, and failing to report crimes of known felons. So before you use very poor grammar again, please think about this, and feel free to provide any FACTS that support your case.

I'm sorry about what you're going through. But you're really mad at the wrong people. If you're angry, be angry at your brother for making a foolish decision that will negatively impact your whole family and his future. This lady could have died, they could have robbed someone who had a weapon, the driver could have pulled his gun on the cop, any number of things could have happened that could have gotten these men killed, or resulted in a homicide which would have meant a life sentence for them all. This could have ended differently. But at the end of the day, saying your brother was clueless about this, isn't believable at all.

Do they not know that expensive electronics have gps built in? One thing we are fortunate for is God added dumb to all criminals. Work and don't steal, thats the smart way out. Flip a burger and buy your own things. Green, white, black or blue get a job. Then invest in a gun and carry permit first thing and walk on the right side of the law and protect yourself from the ones that choose to be criminals and live to harm you and yours.

The biggest issue I have with this whole series of comments is that all of you seem to have turned this into a black/white issue. In this particular case a crime against a white person was committed by one or more black people. That is this particular instance. By the way you are all carrying on, one would assume that no crimes are ever perpetrated by white people. I can assure you that this is not the case.

It may be that the crimes are not reported equally, or punished equally, but they are committed equally. There are just as many white criminals as black criminals. This can easily be supported by comparing police blotters to news coverage. Police reports will give you a more accurate picture of what crime looks like, while the media will give unequal and often, biased coverage.

I really don't know the statistics of black vs. white criminals in Atlanta. But I will say that blacks are as much targets here as whites. A black guy I worked with was robbed by 3 armed men (black) in broad daylight in Midtown a couple of weeks ago.

The whole damn city is under siege from these worthless thugs, if you look like you might have a single dollar bill, or earn an honest living, they will attack like a pack of wolves if given the opportunity.

Had the gun off, this lady would be dead. That's compelling enough for me to say that they need to be locked up for a long time. These jerks were willing to possibly take a human life, not mention destroy their own families, OVER A CELL PHONE. I mean, a freaking cell phone. Unbelievable. No value for any life, not this woman's, not their own, not their very own families lives, no one.
