The PTA works closely with administration to ensure support of teacher efforts and supplementing those initiatives with programs outside the students' regular school day, she told Patch.

"This year alone we added a new climbing structure to the playground, paid for Math Matters, a training program for teachers, increased our visiting artist program and hosted our first Boosterton fundraiser," Coffman said.

The awards are given as part of Georgia's Single Statewide Accountability System, designed to highlight those institutions that perform well and consequences for those that don't under the No Child Left Behind Act.

To win, schools must meet these minimum standards, which are based on the results of the most recent two years of CRCT for grades 1 through 8 in Reading, English/Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science.

For high schools, the standards are based on the results of the Georgia High School Graduation Test — by first-time test takers in the 11th  grade — in English/Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Criteria are based on Full Academic Year students. Both the CRCT and the GHSGT classify achievement in terms of the percent of students who do not meet standards, meet standards and exceed standards.
