Two Inman Teachers Receive Master Teacher Certificates

Sara Looman and Mark Washington were among 70 teachers state-wide named Georgia Master Teachers

Two Inman Middle School teachers were named 2012 Georgia Master Teachers by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission last month.

Sara Looman (sixth grade) and Mark Washington (seventh grade) were the only Atlanta Public Schools teachers to receive the master teacher certificates.

The certificate aims to recognize teachers who demonstrate excellence in the area of student gains. Teachers must have at least three years of experience on a Georgia Clear Renewable Certificate to be eligible.

Teachers must apply for the certification with the help of the district administration.

More information about the certification can be found at the Georgia Master Teachers website.

Master Teacher certificates are a more for the teacher than the students. They are a way for a teacher to make a higher salary. Betsy Bochman got one even though she's been an administrator for years.

The state actually gives no additional $ to teachers/administrators earning these certificates. So your information is incorrect.

I thank you for your correction. I wasn't aware that the state paid the salaries of APS teachers... I would be surprised that even one teacher sought a Master Teacher certificate for altruistic reasons. It's an ersatz resume builder given based on quantitatively measured gains on things like the CRCT. Given the well publicized track record of teachers' influencing student scores surreptitiously, the fact that these 'certificates' are only based on quantitative data over 2 years on a very limited set of parameters makes the moniker "Master Teacher" laughable. It's never been so easy to become a master at something.
