Two-mile street festival set for Virginia-Highland and Poncey-Highland neighborhoods
A street festival unlike any other is coming to the neighborhood. Atlanta Streets Alive, an open street project that aims to encourage residents to take to the streets and be active, is set for Sunday, May 20 on N. Highland Avenue. Organizers will close a two-mile stretch of the road and open it only to foot and bike traffic. Planned outdoor activities include a bicycle parade, sports, yoga, public art and music. The events aim to "build a happier, healthier, and more sustainable Atlanta." “We’re hoping to build a greater awareness for more active lifestyles and more lively streets,” Jenn Graham, one of the lead organizers of the festival, said. Book festival set for Labor Day weekend
Emory University signed on this week as a major sponsor to the Decatur Book Festival, the largest independent book festival in the country. "It is Emory's presence in the Atlanta region and the Decatur community that helped set the stage for the AJC Decatur Book Festival,” festival director Daren Wang said in a statement. Many departments at Emory will take part in the sponsorship including Emory Libraries, Barnes & Noble at Emory, Arts at Emory with the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts and the Michael C. 80’s rock band The Fixx to take Sunday spot
American rockers Rusted Root won’t be taking the stage at Virginia-Highland Summerfest this year. A conflict with Rusted Root’s recording schedule bumped them from the festival, according to DaveFM‘s promotions manager Jay Schultz and marketing director Bryan Bazarte. Both spoke with Virginia-Highland resident and watchdog David Eckoff Friday morning. Rusted Root was scheduled to headline the Saturday, June 2, music line-up. Sunday headliner singer-songwriter Marc Broussard will instead perform Saturday. Eighties rockers The Fixx will headline the Sunday, June 3, line-up. Exhibit will run from June through August

Charles Seabrook to visit Manuel's on Tuesday
Former Atlanta Journal Constitution environmental writer Charles Seabrook will sign copies of his latest book at Manuel’s Tavern on Tuesday. On Tuesday, Seabook will be on hand to talk with the crowd and sign copies of “The World of the Salt Marsh: Appreciating and Protecting the Tidal Marshes of the Southeastern Atlantic Coast.” About the book: The book focuses on an area from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to Cape Canaveral in Florida, and looks at the ecological significance of the marshes, from providing a natural habitat for hundreds of creatures to protecting against costly erosion. The artistic talents of Druid Hills students will be on display next week at Emory University. The Druid Hills High School Art Show will be held Thursday, May 17, from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Candler School of Theology, 1531 Dickey Dr. The show will showcase AP Art projects and outstanding student artwork from the 2011-2012 school year. Free parking is available in the Peavine Visitors Lot and in front of the building. Limited edition notecards are free with a $20 donation. All proceeds benefit Druid Hill High School Art Boosters. Popular American songwriter to speak Feb. 10 through 12 in 2013
Legendary singer-songwriter Paul Simon will be the featured speaker at an Emory University lecture series in February 2013. Simon is known for his lyrical genius and folk-rock collaboration with Art Garfunkel to form the band Simon and Garfunkel in the 1960s. He will give the 2013 Richard Ellmann Lectures in Modern Literature, a series of lectures that are free and open to the public. Simon, 70, will talk about historical antecedents of the music made between 1966 and 1970, according to statement released by Emory University on Thursday. The folk-rock legend is the winner of 12 Grammy Awards and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Event will include movie screening and live music
Fans of the 1998 cult comedy The Big Lebowski can get together this Friday to enjoy the hit comedy with fellow fans. Lebowski Fest, which will feature live music and a screening of the movie, will be held Friday, April 27, at The Masquerade on North Avenue. Fans of the film — known as Achievers — started Lebowski Fest in 2002 in Louisville and has since been held in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, Austin, Seattle, London and Edinburgh. The two-day fest includes one night of live music and screening of the movie and a second night of bowling, trivia and a costume contest.
