Friends: Manuel's Tavern, located at the corner of North Ave and Highland in Atlanta, has just announced a decision to increase their smoke-free area and to be completely smoke-free in 2014.
In a recent FB post, Brian Maloof promises that Manuel's will increase its smoke-free areas, limiting smoking to the bar area only until 2014 when cancer-sticks will be completely eliminated. This brings more than a sigh of relief to thousands of customers who have hacked their way through the smoke to the small non-smoking designated area only to find no room. Thank you Manuel's for taking the risk of offending those too young or reckless to understand how dangerous smoking actually is.
Nicotine is a powerful addiction and our hearts go out to those who have suffered
through numerous attempts to quit. Even with increasingly helpful psychological
techniques and some good medications, smokers still face an average of 5-6
attempts at quitting before success. We need to support those who are trying to
quit and reach out to individuals who have yet to find a way to stop. It isn't
easy, but eliminating smoke from bars and restaurants is a huge step forward!
Thanks Brian for taking this step. Let's all support him with our patronage for this
historic and well-love Atlanta institution.

"Small non-smoking designated area"?? When is the last time you went to Manuel's? That room is giant! A customer is more likely to be unable to find seating in the smoking area than vice versa.

This is a shame. Manuel's has been a smoking establishment for years and to see it change because everyone else is, is really upsetting. This article specifically offends me.

Anna - if you believe this article was offensive, please take a moment to consider the deadly effect of smoking itself. We're talking about preventing needlessly premature deaths and years of lives that are lost.

I guess all those sissy liberals finally got their way!

I'm not sure it has anything to do with liberal or conservative. President Nixon declared war on cancer in 1971 when he helped find the funding for the National Cancer Institute just a few years after the discovery that smoking causes cancer which was first suspected in the 1950s.

Alcohol causes cancer too. Why are they serving it?

Tomathy,
Drinking alcohol doesn't cause cancer in people around you, second hand smoke does. I'm happy to hear about the change, I'll be going much more frequently now.

Yes, but alcohol is also the #1 cause of drunk driving.

Actually, the #1 cause of DUI are the dumb dumbs that act selfishly and get behind the wheel after having a drink or two.

Glad to hear it. It's crazy that there are still people that smoke cigs. To each his own but as soon as you start harming people around you with your "addiction" you've gotta GTFO. Cigs are the reason I don't go out to certain bars and restaurants in Atlanta. Glad Manny's is making this decision.

All these knee-jerk comments from smokers are hilarious!
