Atlanta Composer, Dan Veach, World Premiere

The Atlanta Community Symphony Orchestra will give world premiere performances of two compositions by Atlanta poet and composer Dan Veach: "Elegy for Anna Lee" and "Psalm 23". Dan is the editor of Atlanta Review and his book Elephant Water recently won the Georgia Author of the Year Award in poetry. The Atlanta Community Symphony Orchestra, led by director Juan R. Ramírez, presents this gala concert to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Shearith Israel Shelter for Homeless Women. The repertoire will include Bizet, Veach, and Tchaikovsky.

"Elegy for Anna Lee" is the adagio from Dan Veach's Symphony #1. His mother Anna Lee heard the symphony just days before her death, and this "Elegy" was played at her funeral.

"Psalm 23," a setting of the King James Bible text, was inspired by the timeless, meditative spirit of Gregorian chant. Its unusual 12/4 time signature preserves a gentle rhythmic pulse while relaxing any sense of strict tempo. A clear, clean texture and pure orchestral colors reflect the "still waters" of the Psalm.

Dan Veach, a resident of Decatur, is the founder of Poetry Atlanta (www.poetryatlanta.com), Atlanta’s literary organization since 1985, and the founder and editor of Atlanta Review, Atlanta’s award-winning international poetry journal. His book Elephant Water recently won the Georgia Author of the Year Award in poetry. Mr. Veach is also active in Atlanta’s music scene, playing clarinet and bass clarinet in the Atlanta Community Symphony Orchestra and the Callanwolde Concert Band. He has composed works for band and orchestra, including two symphonies.
