Celebrate Earth Day by Giving Back

Two local businesses help you celebrate Earth Day

Two great local businesses are helping the community celebrate Earth Day.

Recyclable shoes

This weekend at the Whole Foods on Ponce you can bring any of your old shoes and give them to locally owned and operated eco-friendly shoe company, Okabashi.

Okabashi is doing this to encourage the community to recycle old shoes and keep them from polluting our landfills. Recycling bins will be placed inside Atlanta-area Whole Foods Markets to collect old shoes.

Shoppers can bring any type of old shoes to their local Whole Foods & drop them in the bin – a Whole Foods or Okabashi employee will be “manning” the bin throughout the drive.

Okabashi will collect all shoes and bring them back to their factory to be recycled responsibly.

You can also buy cute, comfortable and recyclable Okabashi shoes at our neighborhood Whole Foods or online to support the local economy, enviroment and your pretty feet!

Repurposed books

Better World Books has over 100 big green book donation bins around the Atlanta area for you to donate your used books, including a bin at .

To date, they have recycled and reused 30 million books.

Your donated books will either be sold online, literally recycled and turned into carpeting and other products, or given to literacy partners such as Books for Africa, which is helping end the African book famine.

A portion of each book sale goes back into regional library systems as well as to non-profit education programs in the developing world such as Invisible Children in Northern Uganda.

You declutter your home, books get diverted from landfills, libraries benefit and precious children all over the world learn to read! You can also buy new and used books at the Better World Books website to support global literacy.
