Have Some Fall Fun in the Neighborhood this Weekend

A spooky pub crawl, fall fests, events for runners and National Fossil Day are on the long list of weekend events in and around Virginia-Highland/Druid Hills.

 

Here are some suggestions for getting out and enjoying this beautiful fall weekend:

GO FOR A RUN

Find out what's happening in Virginia Highland-Druid Hillswith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Join the fight against cancer and go for a run in the Winship Win the Fight 5k, which winds through the Druid Hills community and parts of the Emory campus. Former Georgia Bulldogs Coach Vince Dooley will be serving as Grand Marshal.

Online registration has closed, but you can sign up at the race starting area starting at 6:30 a.m. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. and the Tot Trot for kids 7 and under starts at 9:15 a.m.

JOIN A SPOOKY PUB CRAWL

The Horror in the Highlands Bar Festival will feature 7 neighborhood bars. It runs 4-9 p.m. Saturday and includes a costume contest with a $500 prize. Participating bars are offering free shots and, blood and guts and scary effects.

Tickets are $30 at the door, $20 when purchased in advance online.

HEAD TO THE MORNINGSIDE BLOCK PARTY

The 3rd annual Morningside Mile race & block party starts at noon Sunday. Registration for the run has closed, but you can still enjoy the after party, which runs noon-2 p.m. and is sponsored by Morningside Village businesses.

Don't miss the chance to watch people gorge on noodles at 1:30 p.m. during the Doc Chey's Noodle Eating Contest.

Proceeds from the race and block party will go to the Atlanta Fire Foundation for the restoration of the Virginia-Highland fire station #19.

TAKE YOUR KIDS TO NATIONAL FOSSIL DAY

Fernbank Science Center is celebrating National Fossil Day starting at noon Saturday. The free event features a local fossil hunter who has loaned his triceratops fossils for the event and will be on hand to answer questions.The day will also include children's games and prizes.

LEARN ABOUT HIP HOP

Catch the final day of the A3C Hip Hop Film Festival at the Plaza Theatre. The event runs 1-8 p.m. and includes artist Meet & Greets, Panel Discussions and Film Screenings.

OTHER EVENTS NEARBY

  • Candler Park Fall Fest, Saturday and Sunday in Candler Park, 1500 McLendon Ave NE. FREE. The fest runs noon-10 Saturday and noon-8 Sunday featuring food, an artists' market, live music a kids area and yes, another 5k.
  • 13th Annual Trees Atlanta Tree Sale & Festival, 8:00 am Saturday at Trees Atlanta, 225 Chester Ave SE.
