Poll: Which Sidewalk is Most Hazardous?

Help rank which sidewalks are in most desperate need of repair

Welcome to day six of the Virginia-Highland Sidewalk Improvement Project, a collaborative effort to identify sidewalks in the neighborhood in most dire need of repair for safety reasons.

The goal of the project is to identify sidewalks that are a safety hazard in the neighborhood.

Over the course of five days, you looked at photos of more than 50 sidewalks around the neighborhood and voted for what you believe are the most hazardous.

Now, you can chime in one more time.

These 10 sidewalks were voted among the worst in the neighborhood.

Which do you think is the biggest safety concern?

Funding for sidewalk repair is a contentious topic around the city. A Patch report later in this series will outline who is responsible for sidewalk repairs and how Virginia-Highland residents can get involved.

A look back day one, day two, day three, and of the project.

Thanks for pointing that out. I spaced them out a bit more to avoid confusion.

Several of these sidewalks are in close proximity to each other. (N. Highland, Rosedale/Briarcliff Pl, Va Ave) Wouldn't it make sense to repair the most hazardous sections in groups? you would have the manpower/resources already in place--it seems it would be more economical to repair that way instead of sending out crews for multiple trips.

I've been waiting for the broken sidewalk on N. Highland between Highland Terrace and Bellevue (on the west side of the street, in the 1150-1160 range of N. Highland) to come up on your lists, but you don't seem to list any sites in this area. This section has been broken for at least 30 years now. It needs fixing because it gets a lot of foot traffic from the patrons of the restaurants and businesses near the corner of N. Highland and Amsterdam, including pregnant women attending Pierce Yoga. Please add it to your list.

Barbara, thank you for that report. I've walked about 90% of the sidewalks in the neighborhood to get photos and assemble the master list, and rely on others folks like you to report any that we've missed! Would you be able to get photos of the sidewalk at N. Highland between Highland Terrace and Bellevue (on the west side of the street, in the 1150-1160 range of N. Highland)? And then email them to me, ALONG WITH THE SPECIFIC STREET ADDRESS FOR EACH PHOTO, at: tips AT vhconnect dot org (I spelled it out so that automated robots don't harvest the address. You hopefully get the gist of what the email address is. Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who has contacted us to report other sidewalks and sent photos with street addresses! For anyone waiting for sidewalks you know about to come up on the list... don't wait! We are counting on you let us know about the sidewalks that at issue to us, just like Barbara did. Together we'll be able to cover 100% of the neighborhood. And I'll get your photos into the master list. Thank you!
