The Monumental Ball

Making Morningside more like Main Street

This fall the Morningside neighborhood is invited to take part in the Fourth Monumental Ball, a charity gala held to raise funds for community services and monument restoration.

The Monumental Ball will take place on Friday, Oc. 21, from 7pm to 11pm at Magnolia Hall in Piedmont Park.  The Ball will feature a buffet prepared by Affairs to Remember and music by the Elvis-themed band Kingsized.

The Monumental Ball was founded four years ago to raise funds to restore the historic Ivey and Crook Monuments that grace the border of Morningside and Lenox Parks.  This restoration is an ongoing project but, thanks to the Monumental Ball, one that is independent of the community’s general fund.

As the years have passed, the scope of the Monumental Ball has expanded. This year the bulk of ticket sales will benefit the neighborhood Security Patrol.  The aim is to add more patrol shifts to the Morningside neighborhood to increase the safety and security of the area.

Besides helping fund community services, the founders of the Monumental Ball are hoping for another result; people socializing!

Co-chair and founder Susan Schlittler says, “Four years ago I was thinking about Inman Park and all their festivals.  They have a great ball and I thought that this was a great idea and a great way for neighbors to get to know each other.”

“In Morningside, if you have children at a neighborhood school that’s how you get to know your neighbors.  But what about people without kids?  Part of the Ball is providing a venue for everyone in the community to know each other better. We want the Morningside community to feel like a small-town main-street.”

Attire is festive and costumes are encouraged.  Tickets are $50 before Oct. 1 and $60 after Oct. 1.

Tickets are available for purchase at www.monumentalball.org or at the following locations:

Fourteen West REALTORS, 1411 N. Highland Ave.
D.B.A. Barbecue, 1190 N. Highland Ave.
The Cooks Warehouse, 1544 Piedmont Ave.
