Submit Art Projects for the BeltLine

Atlanta BeltLine's temporary public art initiative returns.

The BeltLine is looking for more than a few good artists.

For the second year, the Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) from artists for a temporary public art program called "Art on the Atlanta BeltLine." Last year, the project was the largest public art display ever put on in the city.

Artists are encouraged to submit proposals "that marry their artistic visions with the landscape and sustainability themes of the city’s comprehensive redevelopment project," according to a press release.

The submission deadline is March 28.

Last year, more than 270 visual artists, performers, musicians and historic preservationists participated in the public art project. The program included dance performances on a curvy table in the trees near the Ford Factory lofts and a percussion concert under the bridge at 10th Street and Monroe Drive. There were large rusted statues (two named "Mr. Nice Guy" and "Hot Mama") on the BeltLine near Ponce de Leon Avenue and a beautiful tattered quilt displayed near Monroe Drive. Several murals were painted on bridges along the BeltLine and a Taj Mahal-shaped wigwam was built with a grass-covered swing inside.

This year, the public art will be installed between July 25 and August 31. The work will be on display through fall, and if it's anything like last year, there should be performances scheduled each weekend during the warm months.

The RFP can be downloaded from art.beltline.org. Complete details regarding proposal specifications, deadlines, budgets and requirements, are available on the RFP.
