Bites Nearby: Diesel

Good food paired with good beer

Located at 870 N. Highland Ave., was opened by Justin Haynie in June of 2008. Haynie opened the restaurant and bar after returning home to Atlanta from living in Florida for five years. He found an ad on CraigsList and the rest is history.

Patch: What are some of your more popular dishes?

Justin: Well we can't keep in burgers and wings during football season. We have almost 20 plus toppings for our burgers. Stuff like roasted tomato goat cheese and fried green tomatoes. You can get more than just a bacon cheeseburger here. Our signature specialty burger is our venison burger which comes on ciabatta. We created it last year after our Battle of the Burgers event and it's been a really big hit. Recently we just got a Big Green Egg so we've started doing what we call soul less food. It's a meat and two or a meat and three or a veggie plate and every week the meat options constantly change.

Patch: What is the atmosphere you've tried to create at Diesel?

Justin: We've got a place where you can come in, sit down and have a good time. You can feel like you already know everybody that's sitting around at the bar. You can jump in a conversation with anybody and the bartender is going to be there to help you with that. We have a real friendly atmosphere where you feel like you might be sitting at home, having a beer, watching the game with their buddies.

Patch: What makes your restaurant and bar unique?

Justin: What makes us unique is that comaraderie we have with our clientele. They want to come back and hear the stories from the night before or from when they were out of town. This is the first place they stop with their luggage still on their arm. They want to hear what they missed or tell their stories to their friends. Our customers seem to have a yearning to be here and that's cool.

Patch: What is something guests may not realize on their first visit to Diesel?

Justin: We have a super secret lower parking lot that parks seven cars. Everyone doesn't really know that it exists.

Diesel is open Monday and Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m., Wednesday though Friday from noon until 2 a.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. and Sunday from noon until midnight. Brunch is served until 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Come play poker on Wednesdays or Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll trivia on Thursdays. You can check out Diesel at their website or on Facebook.
