Greening the Curb Appeal in Edgewood

The 1963, mid-century brick ranch located at 1421 Meridian Street Southeast is on the market and has undergone a sustainable renovation to become the first in Edgewood to achieve a Platinum EarthCraft renovation certification.  Clarke Weeks, a sales associate with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s Intown office, has listed the green home, priced at $299,000.  EarthCraft is a green building certification program designed to address climate, energy and water issues unique to the southeastern United States.

“This renovation is unique because very few owners seek to achieve a Platinum EarthCraft level at new construction, let alone a renovation. Actually, there are very few EarthCraft renovations for resale at any price,” said Weeks.  “This house is ideal for the eco-friendly, environmentally conscious buyer and falls in-line or just marginally higher than comparable homes on this street.

The Meridian Street property is designed for the eco-conscious homeowner. Completely gutted and rebuilt by Elemental Green, the renovated three bedroom and three bathroom house has a split floor plan with a finished basement. Features of the home include new wiring and plumbing, Energy Star Samsung Appliances, Kohler fixtures, Delta faucets, a high-efficiency zoned HVAC with whole-house dehumidification and Wi-fi controllable thermostat, high-efficiency lighting, new lcynene foam insulation, low VOC paints, new roof and gutters.

Elemental Green and property owner, Joe Thomas, followed the sustainability guidelines of the EarthCraft standards, utilizing regional suppliers. Many parts and materials for the home were selected for its regional accessibility. For example, the recycled glass countertops in the kitchen were manufactured by Vetrazzo in Tate, Georgia and the Wellborne cabinets were made in Alabama, known for their sustainability program.  Elemental Green recycled approximately 40% of the construction waste including the demolition.
