CDC Blog: 'Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse'

Blog post intended to help people better prepare for disasters

Although it is more likely to see a zombie invasion on a big screen than in a big city, the want people to be prepared— and not just for zombies.

The blog post "Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse" was aimed to show people what it means to be prepared for an emergency, a CDC spokesman told The Wall Street Journal.

"So what do you need to do before zombies…or hurricanes or pandemics for example, actually happen?," Assistant Surgeon General Ali Khan wrote on the blog, which was originally posted on Monday. "First of all, you should have an emergency kit in your house. This includes things like water, food, and other supplies to get you through the first couple of days before you can locate a zombie-free refugee camp (or in the event of a natural disaster, it will buy you some time until you are able to make your way to an evacuation shelter or utility lines are restored)."

A spokesman said they noticed the popularity of the word "zombie" during a Twitter talk on Japan and decided to use the popular topic to remind people the importance of being prepared for emergencies.

"Plan your evacuation route. When zombies are hungry they won’t stop until they get food (i.e., brains), which means you need to get out of town fast! Plan where you would go and multiple routes you would take ahead of time so that the flesh eaters don’t have a chance! This is also helpful when natural disasters strike and you have to take shelter fast."

The blog post gained so much popularity that the link has been down since Wednesday afternoon. Luckily, the blog was reposted in its entirety on the Emergency Preparedness and Response portion of the CDC website.
