'Social Local' iPhone App to Launch at Summerfest

NearbyThis, a website that allows users to browse dining, shopping and events in the area, is integrating mobile technology for users.

An iPhone application that aims to give users information on things to explore around them is set to launch during Virginia-Highland Summerfest this weekend.

NearbyThis, a website that allows users to browse dining, shopping and events in the area, is integrating mobile technology for users.

"NearbyThis helps consumers see what’s going on around them in real time and save money with daily deals by leveraging social media," CEO Ray Abram said. "For retailers, NearbyThis offers the power to have two-way conversations with mobile customers."

NearbyThis allows users to find up-to-date info on nearby restaurants, learn about new things to do nearby and save money with daily deals such as Groupon and ScoutMob, all on one mobile application.

Glenn Martin, developer of the company’s new iPhone app, said he built the application "to be more robust" than other apps.

"Imagine going to a mall and having all coupons for nearby stores on hand, having the ability to receive realtime communications from the stores, as well as promotions from advertisers selling goods in those stores," Martin said. "Other advertising models target users by behavior. We do it by proximity, which is more efficient and cost-effective."

To celebrate the launch of the iPhone app, the company will be giving free city Segway tours at .
