Update: More Photos of Damage, Residents Still Without Power in Morningside

Fallen trees block several roads in the neighborhoods

Morningside, Virginia-Highland and Druid Hills residents woke up to messy roads Tuesday morning after severe thunderstorms ripped through Metro Atlanta overnight.

Emory Village is still without power Tuesday and all businesses are closed. The university and hospitals are operating normally. Traffic lights in Druid Hills were out Tuesday morning and police were directing traffic at major intersections.

Residents in parts of Morningside are still without power Tuesday evening, according to several homeowners. Georgia Power is in the neighborhood working to restore power.

As of 3:30 p.m., roughly 39,000 Georgia Power customers in Metro Atlanta are without power. Crews from Missouri, Tennessee and Louisiana are helping to restore power as quickly as possible.

There are roughly 70 broken power poles and 117 spans of wire down in Metro Atlanta, according to Georgia Power, and about 250 power poles and 400 spans of wires need to be replaced statewide.

N. Highland Avenue was closed at N. Morningside Drive due to a tree in the road. Briarcliff Road was closed before approaching N. Decatur Road from the South, also due to a fallen tree.
