Today: DeKalb Players in the Record Books; Week 5 Game Results

Dawson, Pair of Robinsons Among Those Holding State’s All-Time Single Game Passing and Receiving Records

Georgia High School Football Daily published a list last week of the state’s all-time single-game passing and receiving performances, and three DeKalb players made the list.

Incredibly, one player – former M.L. King QB Jonquel Dawson – made the list four separate times. Dawson’s 527 yards passing against Colquitt County on November 18, 2010 was the 5th best passing performance in state history. His 486 yards against South Gwinnett on September 3 of the same year was good enough for a tie for 9th, while his 449 yards against Luella on October 7, 2011 came in at #13. Dawson threw for 415 yards against Valdosta on October 2, 2010 and that was the 18th best passing performance in Georgia history. Quite a run for the former M.L. King QB.

Decatur’s Terryon Robinson is the only Georgia receiver to have racked up more than 300 yards receiving in a single game. Robinson’s 322 yards against Riverwood on September 9, 2011 is the most prolific receiving day in Georgia history.

Another Robinson – Demarco Robinson, who also played at M.K. King – had two performances that made the list. Robinson’s 294 yards receiving against South Gwinnett on September 3, 2010 is the second best receiving game in state history while his 246 yards receiving against Colquitt County on November 19, 2010 was good enough for #11.

Week 5 Results and Recaps

Chamblee vs. South Atlanta

The Chamblee Bulldogs improved to 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2007 with a 29-7 victory over previously undefeated South Atlanta (3-1) at Lakewood. The Bulldogs take this week off before entering Region 6-AAAA play in two weeks.

Tucker vs. Dunwoody

The visiting Tigers ran for 376 yards in a 50-0 victory over Dunwoody. Three different Tucker RBs scored twice. Yusuf Minor made the most of five carries, rushing for two scores and 156 yards. Dallas Rivers added two rushing scores, and Dominique Sanders scored on a run from scrimmage and also on a punt return.

M.L. King vs. North Atlanta

The M.L. King Lions won their 14th consecutive regular season game and the defense pitched its third shutout of the season in a 46-0 win over North Atlanta (0-4) in Region 6-AAAAA play Saturday at Lakewood.

The Lions’ offense was led by QB Monqavious Johnson who tossed three TD passes, two to senior Demarquis Polite, in the win. M.L. King improved to 4-0 on the season, 3-0 in region action.

Redan vs. Banneker

The Raiders took an early 7-0 lead, but Banneker’s Jalen White carried the host Trojans to an easy 29-7 win. White carried the ball 29 times, gaining 220 yards and scoring on runs of 32, two and five yards. QB James Boyd was efficient in the pocket completing nine of 13 attempts for 127 yards including a TD pass to Jahmmir Taylor.

Marist vs. Therell

Myles Willis threw a pair of TD passes to Greg Toboada and also ran for a 38-yard score as Marist raced to a 39-0 halftime lead and cruised to 53-0 victory. The host War Eagles finished their scoring in the third quarter, including rushing TDs of three and 42 yards by Chase Martenson. Nick Carrier added a 19-yard interception return for a score.

Grady vs. Lithonia

Marquavious Henry, making his first start at QB, threw for three TDs in Grady’s 21-0 win over Lithonia Thursday night. Lithonia, which was held to 47 yards total offense, fell to 0-4. Grady improved to 3-1.

Henry started in place of injured Kivon Taylor. He completed 4 of 7 passes for 84 yards and three TDs. Two of Henry’s scoring passes went to Isiah Jenkins, including a screen pass where Jenkins followed his blockers, broke a couple of tackles, and then faked out a defender in the open field for a 58-yard TD for a 14-0 advantage with 57 seconds left in the first half.

Stephenson vs. Lakeside-DeKalb

The visiting Jaguars took control early, building a 28-0 lead by halftime and cruising to a 63-0 win. Stephenson picked off Vikings quarterback Nick Alexander three times. Alexander finished 16-for-29 for 98 yards. Lakeside's Brad Earnest had 81 total yards on offense and nine tackles on defense.

Columbia vs. Carver-Atlanta

Carver-Atlanta scored 28 second-half points and held off a last-second Columbia drive to win 28-27 Friday at Lakewood Stadium.

Carver (4-0) is undefeated after four games for the first time since 2007, when the Panthers won their first 11 games before losing in the second round of the playoffs. Last year was Carver’s first losing season in seven years under coach Darren Myles.

With 3:45 to play in the game, Columbia QB Courtney Davis dropped back to pass on third down and lost the ball. Carver recovered at the 24 and scored five plays later when Montavious Taylor ran in from the 5. The Eagles next drive started at the 35 and they moved the ball inside the Carver 30 before Christopher Beady’s last-second field goal try fell short.

St. Pius X vs. Lovett

St. Pius X Catholic High School and Lovett met Friday night for the first time in 25 years and the host Golden Lions got the better of the visiting Lions with St. Pius winning 24-0 behind two touchdowns from Ryan Braswell.

The senior fullback scored on 1-yard runs in the first and fourth quarters in the first meeting between the Atlanta private schools since St. Pius won 28-12 in 1983. There was more than a long wait to build anticipation: St. Pius (3-1) is ranked No. 5 in Class AAA, and Lovett (2-2) is No. 4 In AA with wins over two state-ranked AAA teams.

Lovett, which has beaten two ranked teams within SPX’s region (6-AAA) with wins over Woodward Academy and Blessed Trinity, was led by sophomore quarterback Willie Candler but never threatened.

Miller Grove vs. Arabia Mountain

QB Ken Allen snuck into the end zone from one yard out and Kwame Simon added the PAT to complete Miller Grove’s rally from a 20-0 third quarter deficit in the Wolverines’ 21-20 victory over Arabia Mountain.

It was the first meeting between the Wolverines (3-1) and Rams (1-3) and the win kept Miller Grove in the Region 6-AAAAA playoff race.

The Rams looked to have the game in hand following a 62-yard fumble return by Kwame Bowens for a 20-0 advantage with 4:29 left in the third quarter.

Miller Grove reversed the momentum driving right back down the field and scoring on a 28-yard pass play from Allen to Devante Parks with Simon’s point after making it 20-7 with 1:30 left in the third.

Allen helped pull the Wolverines within 20-14 after a Jordan Cathey interception set up a 25-yard TD pass to Myles Hughes to cut the gap to six with 10:15 to play.

Allen’s TD to set up Simon’s game-winning extra point came with 5:22 to play following a fumble return by Justin Swift to the Arabia Mountain 26.

The Rams drove down to the Miller Grove 27, but a holding penalty put them in a first and 28 they could not overcome and Miller Grove took over on downs and ran out the clock to seal the win.
