Robert Maloof Funeral Monday

Robert Maloof, 76 managed Manuel's Tavern in Poncey Highland until 2006.

The funeral for Robert Maloof, the former longtime manager of Manuel's Tavern, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at at Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta.

The tavern, one of Atlanta's most popular watering holes, will be closed until 6 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Maloof, 76, died July 19 in Florida while vacationing. He was the brother of Manuel Maloof, the tavern's namesake as well as a former DeKalb County CEO. Manuel Maloof died in 2004.

The obit in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said Mr. Maloof grew up in Atlanta, graduated from Mairst High in 1956 and started working at Manuels' in 1957. The newspaper said,

Mike Klank, former Manuel’s employee and current proprietor of Taqueria del Sol, said Maloof taught him invaluable lessons about the restaurant business.

“He recognized the importance that your bar should be open to everybody and that you needed everybody to make it work,” Klank said. “You needed the politicians, the winos, the CEOs, everybody. And it was Robert’s personality that made a lot of that work.”

Robert Maloof retired in 2006. A second service will be held at noon Aug. 2 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hayesville, N.C.
