Crime Report: Cash Stolen from Virginia-Highland Business

Safety report from Virginia-Highland

The following report was sent to Virginia-Highland residents by Virginia-Highland Civic Association safety chairman John Wolfinger.

The following reports are gleaned from Zone 6 for the 2012 weeks of 20 and 21, with emphasis on our VaHi Beat 601, but with news from around the zone as it applies to us.  Again, I state that these reports are not meant to scare anyone, but to make you aware of what happens around us everyday.

Residential Burglary: A Greenwood Avenue apartment was entered by pulling out the burglar bars and pulling up a back window.

Commercial Burglary: The Indie-Pendent store off St. Charles Avenue lost cash from their register by a burglar who set off the alarm system and was seen fleeing via the front door at about 8:30 a.m.  He had broken in via their back door which opens into an enclosed courtyard in the middle of this business block which means he had come down from the roof.  The proprietor had been advised earlier by an A/C repairman that someone had been sleeping on the roof.  Please advise Zone 6 when things of this nature are discovered so they will know of potential trouble!

A street floor window at the Briarcliff Summit was broken, but no entry made at 2:30 a.m.  The perp was found across the street next to the Majestic with a trail of blood across PDL Avenue to his location.  He had another story about being stabbed further west on PDL Avenue in front of Fellini's Pizza - but the responding officers did not buy his story.  His wounds were from broken glass - not a knife stab.

Residential Robbery: No reported incidents in Beat 601

Commercial Robbery: No reported incidents in Beat 601

Larceny From Vehicle: Vehicles were entered on Bonaventure Avenue, Lanier Boulevard, St. Charles Avenue, Briarcliff Place, North Highland Avenue (2), Monroe Drive, PDL Place (2) and Virginia Avenue (2).  Many officers now, when writing up these reports, specifically state when stolen items have been left in plain sight.  Not sure as to what this means when an insurance claim is filed - but think of this when you are exiting your vehicle to make sure all items are taken with you.  Not all reports that I receive now have the stolen items listed - but this list can give you an idea of what is taken from vehicles in just two weeks in just our Zone.  5 laptops taken, 5 wallets/purses taken (along with the contents), 4 GPS systems lost, 7 cell phones removed, and two rifles stolen to add to the arsenal on our streets.  Also 2 license plate decals torn off and 4 more catalytic converters sawed off - not much you can do about these thefts, unfortunately.

Larceny Other: At midnite on the back patio at the Bookhouse Pub on PDL Avenue, a cell phone was snatched from a table with the perp fleeing thru the restaurant and across PDL Avenue on foot.  Similar incidents occurred at a College Avenue restaurant and a coffee shop on Garrett Street.  Keep those phones off the table!

Elsewhere in the Zone - - A PDL Avenue Kroger patron left her billfold on the checkout counter and when she came back it was gone (surprised?).

More copper wiring stolen from lite poles in Freedom Park.

Ever wonder as to how or why street name signs disappear?  In Candler Park a young man was sighted carrying a street sign - he told the officer he had hung from it til it broke off - he also had some weed and part of a pill in his possession and was charged with interference of government property, theft by taking and possession of the controlled substances.

Two nitrous oxide tanks were stolen from behind a dental office on Piedmont Avenue.

Cell phones were snatched from pedestrians on Boulevard @ Parkway Drive, Edgewood Avenue, Cherokee Avenue and East Confederate Avenue.  A phone was snatched from a car passenger at Boulevard @ North Avenue, and from poolside on Cityline Avenue and at the basketball courts in Candle Park.

Our PDL Avenue Kroger and Publix stores nabbed 7 shoplifters.

Pedestrian Robbery: No reported incidents in Beat 601 in this time period. However, in week 22 we had three such reported incidents here, as well as similar incidents along the trail in Freedom Park, Inman Park and Old 4th Ward.  These details will be in my next report.
