Crime Report: More Car Breakins Reported

Safety report from Virginia-Highland

The following report was sent to Virginia-Highland residents by VHCA safety chairman John Wolfinger.

The following reports are from our Zone 6 crime stats for the 2012 weeks 15 and 16, with emphasis on our VaHi Beat 601, but with news from around Zone 6 as it applies to us.  Again, I state, these reports are not meant to scare anyone, but to make you aware of what happens around us everyday and to raise your level of alertness.

Residential Burglary  -  On Bellevue Drive at 11:00 p.m. the female resident was upstairs coming out of her child's room when she spied an intruder on the first floor - he left when discovered taking 2 laptops, a purse and a cell phone.  Entry was via a pried open front window.

Commercial Burglary -  No reported incidents in Beat 601

Residential Robbery  -  No reported incidents in Beat 601

Commercial Robbery  -  No reported incidents in Beat 601.  But in nearby Old 4th Ward at 2:30 p.m. at the Texaco at Boulevard @ Irwin Street, N.E. - the manager was ambushed beside the store on his way to the bank.  He was shot twice in the leg and the bank bag containing $13,000 to $14,000 was taken.  Let this be another warning to our area merchants to be very cautious making trips to the bank.  There is a strong possibility that the manager had been watched before as he left for bank trips.  Vary your bank trip times and routes and ALWAYS hide the bank bag in your clothing.

Larceny From Vehicle  -  Vehicles were entered on Bonaventure Avenue, Greenwood Avenue, Maiden Lane, PDL Place, North Highland Avenue, Park Drive and "several" (probably seven) times on Cresthill Avenue (all on the nite of 4/10).   The report was written in such a way that I do not know the exact number of Cresthill vehicles violated.  The new way our Zone 6 crime stats are now written, I cannot tell you how many types of items were stolen all over the Zone.

Larceny Other  -  As an apparent act of malicious vandalism a North Highland Avenue front yard wood fence was damaged and partly stolen.  In nearby Grant Park a resident discovered when preparing to file his income tax report, that his name and Social security number had been used to file a report and the refund check had already been issued to the fake filer.

Pedestrian Robbery  -  At 2:35 a.m. on 4/21 a female Highland View resident was robbed at gunpoint on North Highland Avenue as she walked home solo.  She was approached from behind - the perp grabbed her waist and took her wallet and cell phone.  She was not physically harmed.  If you are faced with a solo walk home after an evening at one of our many hospitality establishments - PLEASE ask an employee to get a cab for you.
