A 2-year-old girl died after somehow getting locked in the family’s car in Clarkston as temperatures climbed into the 80s.
Police say the child’s mother came home to the English Oaks Apartments on Church Street with her 2-year-old twins just before 3 p.m. Monday. The mother reportedly took one child inside to change its diaper and told her niece to watch the other play outside.
Clarkston police say for some unknown reason, the niece was distracted, reports WGCL TV.
A car door had been left open and the toddler climbed in and shut the door closed, trapping herself inside the hot car.
Police say it was an hour before anyone realized the child was missing. The mother and niece looked for the toddler and found the girl in the car.
The toddler was not breathing when police and firefighters were called to the scene, says WSB TV. CPR was performed at the scene on the child, who was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where she was pronounced dead.
No charges had been filed in what police called a tragic accident.
