Off-Duty Cops Arrest Robbery Suspect in VaHi

Atlanta police say a man held a knife to a woman's throat on Los Angeles Avenue and demanded money. She escaped and two officers working off-duty jobs took the suspect into custody.

An Atlanta police officer working an off-duty job in Virginia Highland arrested a robbery suspect late Wednesday night.

Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones gave this account:

A woman was sitting in her vehicle on Los Angeles Avenue when a man approached and asked for change. She reached for change and the man pulled a knife. The woman suffered a cut on her face but drove away.

She flagged down an officer who was working an off-duty job at 1026 N. Highland Ave., which is the address for Highland Tap. While talking to the officer, the woman noticed the suspect walking down Highland on the other side of the street.

The officer and another officer working an extra job took the man into custody. Elmer Serrano, 32, was charged with robbery and taken to the Fulton County Jail.
