Atlanta Police say the cause of the five-car pile up on Ponce de Leon Avenue Thursday morning is still unknown.
According to a statement released Thursday afternoon, the driver of a Nissan Altima traveling east bound on Ponce near Clifton Road around 7 a.m. lost control of the car “for reasons unknown,” crossed over into the westbound lanes and hit a taxi Caravan head on.
The accident shut down Ponce for much of the morning commute, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Contrary to initial reports, there was no car fire reported on any of the five cars involved in the accident, the statement said.
The driver of the Nissan was trapped in the car and rescued by Atlanta Fire Rescue. The driver suffered blunt force trauma, internal injuries & head injuries.

The person driving the taxi sustained a broken femur, among other injuries.
The names of the drivers will not be released this afternoon “due to the severe nature of the injury,” the statement released by police said.
No charges have been filed as of Thursday afternoon and the traffic investigation unit is continuing to investigate the accident.
