The state is moving to align itself with the U.S. calendar.

State of Georgia officials have moved to formalize the primary election date in 2014.

On Jan. 17, the Georgia House of Representatives passed legislation that would align the state's 2014 election calendar with that of the federal government. That means primary elections would be on May 20.

The legislation, House Bill 310, now needs the signature of Gov. Nathan Deal to become official. It already had passed the state Senate.

Also, the bill would set qualifying dates in early March. Voting in Fulton and DeKalb counties would be at county precincts.
