APS Redistricting: Morningside Parents Project Overcrowding

Grady High capacity could hit 1,600 by 2020, parents project

A group of Morningside parents projected school enrollment numbers based on the latest plan to redraw Atlanta Public Schools attendance zones.

More than 1,000 students would attend in Virginia-Highland next school year if Superintendent Erroll B. Davis’ plan is adopted, according to a spreadsheet posted on the Morningside Rezoning website.

The school district will not release forecast data for Davis' proposal, so passionate parents are left to crunch the numbers themselves.

Neither the Coan community nor the Inman community are in favor of this option.

Inman was built for about 770 students but can hold about 900 students, principal Paula Herrema said at a meeting earlier this year.

The current enrollment at Inman is around 900 students, and Herrema said the school functions well today but wouldn’t be able to handle more kids without an expansion.

Parents project enrollment at Inman could hit nearly 1,400 students in 2017 when current kindergarteners would attend sixth grade.

Projections for Grady

Parents project the enrollment at Grady High School will decline for a few years then spike up.

Enrollment could dip to 1,319 students in 2015, but ramp up from there.

Grady is built for about 1,275 students.

By the time the current kindergarten class reaches ninth-grade, more than 1,600 students could be enrolled in the school, parents project.
