DeKalb Schools Superintendent Expected to Make Redistricting Recommendation Monday

The DeKalb board of education will hear from Interim Superintendent Ramona Tyson Monday night about plans to close 12 elementary schools and redraw attendance boundaries.

After six public input meetings, the time has come for DeKalb County School System Interim Superintendent Ramona Tyson to make an official recommendation to the board of education about possible school closings and redistricting.

Tyson is expected to address the board during the board of education meeting Monday night in Stone Mountain.

In early January, the board of education announced a to redraw attendance zones throughout the district, close 12 elementary schools and make Avondale Middle and High School strictly magnet schools.

The school system hired MGT of America, a consulting firm, to help develop the proposal, which is designed to eliminate more than 11,000 empty seats.

If the proposal were to be approved as presented, Briar Vista Elementary, Fernbank Elementary and Druid Hills High School could see an increase in enrollment next school year.

The board plans to hold two public hearings regarding Tyson's recommendation on March 1 and 3, and then vote on the issue March 7.

The meeting Monday will begin at 6 p.m. in the J. David Williamson Board Room at the Administrative and Instructional Complex, 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard, Stone Mountain.
