Nominees demonstrate evidence of direct involvement in enhancing the quality of student life on campus, active attempts to involve students and student life staff in governing the institution, and demonstrable contributions to the profession that have an impact beyond an individual campus.

Wagner was nominated by a diverse cross-section of Emory administrators, staff and students. He was noted for his strong commitment to the student experience since joining Emory in 2003, including his engagement and accessibility on campus, from setting aside office hours each week to meet with any student to helping first-year students move in to their residence halls.

Among several achievements, nominators noted that Wagner endorsed and supported a Student Mental Health and Counseling fee to guarantee funding for mental health services, making Emory one of a handful of schools in the country to have such dedicated funding. He also was noted for his leadership on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues and for taking part in the national “It Gets Better” video campaign this past year.

Wagner was cited for his work with presidential commissions to collaborate on student issues, such as improvements in student health insurance and childcare for graduate students. Nominators also recognized his support for an innovative “green” freshman village residence hall complex to enhance the first-year student experience, improved athletic facilities and efforts to secure funding to sustain student volunteer efforts and other student activities.
