Fernbank, Briar Vista Meet AYP

Schools exceed federal benchmark standards

Both and exceeded the yearly progress standards for student test scores in 2011, according to a report by the Georgia Deparment of Education.

More than 92 percent of Fernbank students tested proficent or advanced on the math portion of the test this year. More than 98 percent tested proficent or advanced on the English portion.

Adequate Yearly Progress is one of several methods put into place by the federal No Child Left Behind Act in 2001 to continually evaluate students, teachers and schools. Schools are expected to improve AYP scores each year.

About 80 percent of Briar Vista students tested proficent or advanced on the math portion of the test. Just over 86 percent of students tested proficent or advanced on the English portion of the test.

Fernbank and Briar Vista are feeder schools for , formerly known as Shamrock Middle School, and .

The middle school failed to meet AYP in 2011, but the high school was one of six DeKalb County high schools to meet the federal benchmark.
