Springdale Park, Mary Lin Teachers Named Grant Winners

Winners awarded $7,500

A teacher at and a principal at were awarded grants on Tuesday by Atlanta Families' Awards for Excellence in Education.

Shenise Shorter, a first-grade teacher at Springdale Park, and Brian Mitchell, principal at Mary Lin, are among 10 winners of the grant money.

Each educator recieved a $7,500 grant that will go toward funding for a school project of the winner's choice ($3,500), professional development ($1,500) and a personal stipend ($2,500).

Atlanta Families' Awards for Excellence in Education has awarded more than $500,000 to teachers and principals in Atlanta Public Schools over the past six years.

Other winners of the 2011 grant include Ed Chang  from KIPP STRIVE Academy, Nieves Corrales from Centennial Place Elementary School, Naja Freeman from Bunche Middle School, Kenny Kraus from Sarah Smith Elementary School, Alicia Pagan from Drew Charter School, Robin Robbins from Burgess-Peterson Academy, Mike Stewart from KIPP STRIVE Academy and Sarah Visel from Morris Brandon Elementary.
