Early Ceremony Held for Dogwood Invitational at Druid Hills Golf Club

Small gathering of golfers gather for round of play at scenic neighborhood club

Although the players won't tee off their first shot until next month, the buzz for the 2011 Dogwood Invitational is swirling through the air at historic and throughout the community.

This week, a handful of players gathered on the links to partake in the media day festivities, which included a meet-and-greet breakfast and a round of golf on the Club’s scenic 18 holes.

"The Dogwood Invitational at Druid Hills Golf Club enjoyed the opportunity to share with members of the media our hospitality and entertainment for a great day on the nearly 100 year old course," said Edward Toledano, Dogwood Invitational Tournament chairman. "Our hope was to continue to tell the story of The Dogwood and the way we give back to the game and to junior golfers."

Among those in attendance included WSB-TV news anchor John Bachman as well as Georgia Tech freshman and 2011 Dogwood Invitational participant Anders Albertson.

“I love Druid Hills; it’s one of my favorite places to play,” said Albertson. “The Dogwood is one of my favorite tournaments. It’s well run and there’s a great field. I had a great time playing (Wednesday). It was all about having fun. I was glad to be a part of it.”

The 2011 Dogwood Invitational, which takes place June 27-July 2, is an elite amateur golf championship established to promote the game of amateur golf and support junior golf organizations. Founded in 1941, the tournament has grown into an internationally ranked top amateur golf event.

"The Dogwood Invitational’s field represents the best of the best amateur players," said Toledano. "The Scratch Players ranking (16th U.S.; 27th world) has validated what Atlanta’s golfers have known for generations – that The Dogwood is a not to be missed event on the national golfing scene. We bring the best golfers in the world to Atlanta so that we can raise money to support junior and amateur golf."

Tournament participation is by invitation only, with 8 open spots in the qualifier held Monday, June 27, prior to tournament play. The tournament is run by The Dogwood Foundation, a 501(c)3 non profit, and proceeds from sponsorships are directed to the Atlanta Junior Golf Association and The Wayne Reynolds Scholarship Foundation.
