Morningside Resident Commits to Presbyterian College

Matt Citron to play forward at South Carolina school

Morningside resident Matt Citron will play Division I basketball next season.

Citron, a senior forward at Woodward Academy, committed to play at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina.

“We feel like Matt will be able to contribute right away," Presbyterian College coach Gregg Nibert said in a press release. “He runs the floor well and has improved his outside shooting.  We think he'll be a tremendous defensive player for us at the four.”

Matt is the son of Laura and Tod Citron, who have lived in Morningside for over 20 years, and the brother of Chloe Citron, who attends .

Matt is known for his exceptional athleticism, intensity on the court and fierce drive to win.

“Matt's success on the basketball court has been beneficial in improving his team's performance,” Woodward basketball coach Anthony Thomas said. “Matt has played a leadership role as a small forward for the War Eagles, and also excelled in AAU.”

More than 30 colleges contacted Matt in his junior year including Yale University, Presbyterian College, Penn, Lafayette, University of Rochester, Davidson, Elon, Georgia Southern and Mercer.

He started playing basketball at 4-years-old with Haygood Hoops and summer AAU leagues.  Matt continued to compete in AAU leagues through high school and traveled throughout the Midwest and Southeast with the Atlanta All-Stars AAU team. He was also a finalist in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution High School Dunk Contest in 2011.

Matt attended and Inman Middle School. He transferred to Woodward in eighth grade.

While a student at Morningside, Matt played in the City of Atlanta Recreation League with Coach Shannon, a former Harlem Globetrotter, and Coach Gerald from Grady High School. At Inman, Matt played for Coach Derek Hooley and the Inman Middle School team.
