Triple Play: Emory Sweeps Rhodes, Trounces Spelman

Softball team celebrates Senior Day with wins; head coach Siqueiros notches milestone 400th victory

Saturday was Senior Day for the softball team at (32-2-1) and the No. 2-ranked Eagles celebrated with three-straight victories over two teams. In the process, head coach Penny Siqueros reached a milestone 400th victory.

A noon start commenced with a sweep of Rhodes College, 5-2 and 5-4, before the Eagles trounced Spelman College, 13-0.

"The games against Rhodes were intense. They're a good club…they're not one of those teams that's going to roll over, and what I'm proud of is that they [Emory] came from behind in both games," said Siqueros, who noted the contribution of her entire squad on a long afternoon.

"You can play so many games in one day but it helps when you have a large squad, and I emptied out our dugout and let all the other kids go out there and they got it done, which is good."

In game one, Emory (32-2-1) overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first inning to rally with five unanswered runs. Megan Light notched three RBIs and relief pitcher Jaclyn Jacobi tossed six shutout innings to lead the way for the hosts.

Rhodes College proved more stubborn in the second game, as Emory were required to come from behind yet again.

Jessica Boni, Catherine Norman and Boeshore (double, 2 RBIs) all had RBIs while an error accounted for another run. Relief pitcher Jamie Melson, who took the mound during the first inning, picked up the win.

Game three was more straightforward for Emory.  Spelman starting pitcher Jessica Times was blasted for 7 hits and 13 runs in the first inning. The Eagles finished with 11 hits, while pitchers Amanda Kardys and Light teamed up for a no-hitter.
