Atlanta Symphony Welcomes Emory Reps to Board

New members will serve three-year terms

An Emory executive and a former board member are among six members welcomed onto the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra board of directors last week.

S. Wright Caughman, executive vice president for health affairs, and Carlos del Rio, the chair of the Hubert Department of Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, will serve three year terms on the board.

S. Wright Caughman, M.D., is Emory University’s Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, CEO of Emory’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC), and Board Chairman of Emory Healthcare. Dr. Caughman previously served as WHSC’s Vice President for Clinical and Academic Integration, a role in which he was responsible for coordinating, implementing, and managing the center’s strategic plan for transforming health and healing. He was also Director of The Emory Clinic and Executive Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Caughman is the former Chair of the Dermatology Department in Emory’s School of Medicine. Dr. Caughman joined the dermatology faculty at Emory in 1990 after serving as Medical Officer and Principal Investigator in the dermatology branch of the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health. In addition to teaching and working as a staff physician at The Emory Clinic, Grady Memorial Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, he was Director of Research in Emory’s Department of Dermatology for four years before becoming department Chair. He has been a member of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in the Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, of the Winship Cancer Institute faculty, and has served as Director of the Emory Skin Diseases Research Center. Dr. Caughman led a successful research program in cutaneous biology for many years and was one of two co‐chairs of the School of Medicine research strategic plans in 1997 and 2003. He was named Chair of the Department of Dermatology in 1997.After receiving his undergraduate degree at Davidson College and his M.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Caughman completed his residency (and served as Chief Resident) in dermatology at Harvard Medical School. He was a high school English teacher for several years before pursuing his medical degree.

Carlos del Rio, M.D., is the Chair of the Hubert Department of Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, as well as the Co-Director of the Emory Center for AIDS Research and Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at Emory University Medical School. He was born in Mexico City. His father was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Mexico. His wife, Dr. Jeannette Guarner, is a pathologist. Carlos and Jeannette have two adult children. Carlos was recommended by two board members, Lynn Schinazi and his neighbor, John White. In addition to having served on numerous professional boards, Carlos has served on the boards of AID Atlanta and the Paideia School. Carlos and Jeannette are life-long music lovers, current Atlanta Symphony Orchestra classical season subscribers and contributors.
