The Carter Center was founded in 1982 by former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. The center's main goals include peace-building initiatives and improving health care options and opportunities in troubled and impoverished parts of the world. The center, which has dispatched its staff and assistance to more than 70 countries, also is focused on strengthening human rights, decreasing hunger and the expansion of economic opportunities in poor nations. The Carter Center coordinates its efforts in partnership with Emory University.
