The funeral for Lillian Lewis, the wife of U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Ebenezer Baptist Church at 407 Auburn Ave., Atlanta. Mrs. Lewis, 73, died Monday at Emory University Hospital. She and Rep. Lewis, whose 5th District includes Decatur and most of the city of Atlanta, had been married 44 years. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said, Flowers may be sent to Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home, 1003 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. SW, Atlanta, until Sunday. After that day, flowers should be sent to Ebenezer Baptist Church. Lee Lowery grew up in the Morningside neighborhood and his killing this week ended a life that left a "trail marked by loyalty and kindness."
There will be a visitation period Saturday afternoon in Midtown in memory of Lee Lowery III. Lowery, 20, was shot and killed Monday afternoon in the breezeway outside a Ponce de Leon Avenue apartment loft complex. The visitation will be on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 3 – 5 p.m. at H.M. A memorial service for Sam Goldman is set for Thursday, Sept. 13
Sam Goldman, executive director of Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, died suddenly Monday morning at his Decatur home. Goldman, 63, had worked at Callanwolde for more than 30 years and served as the executive director since 1988. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Sept. 13 at Callanwolde, 980 Briarcliff Road. The service is open to the public. "Sam will be greatly missed," Callanwolde spokesperson Susan Summers said in a statement. "For these 33 years he has shown the utmost dedication to providing arts to the community and to the mission of Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. I think Warren recognized a potential future neighborhood advocate and wanted to bring me into the fold. We worked on a project together for a Morningside Elementary School Auction that did not go the way I wanted, and I was a bit annoyed… at Warren. What did Warren do? Took me out to lunch at Atkins Park Restaurant, never told me I was full of myself, and showed me what real patience and leadership look like. A decade later I appreciate even more what a person like Warren Bruno offers a community. He loved life — and he made sure that those around him had the opportunity to do …

Atlanta lost a beloved community man Wednesday morning. Atkins Park owner Warren Bruno, 64, died after an eight-year battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife and four children. Bruno founded what is now known as Virginia-Highland Summerfest in 1983, the same year he purchased Atkins Park Tavern on N. Highland Avenue. He later helped opened Orsmby’s on Howell Mill Road.
