Briar Vista Spring Fling Set for Saturday

Carnival, silent auction and more

The Briar Vista Elementary School PTA is hosting the annual Spring Fling this Saturday, May 19. The event will feature a one-mile fun run for the kids, carnival with games and attractions and a silent auction with great stuff from local businesses. All residents are invited to participate. Kids that are not enrolled are welcome to participate in the fun run and Kid’s Carnival. Briar Vista is one of three public elementary schools in Georgia that offers a choice between Traditional and Montessori classrooms. APS to Host Budget Meetings

APS seeks to close an anticipated gap of $47 million.

The Atlanta Public Schools is holding a series of public meetings this month to discuss the proposed 2012-13 budget of $564.8 million. The Board of Education, which gave preliminary approval on the proposed budget May 14, must give final approval at its June 4 meeting. The district aims to close a $47 million shortfall by axing 475 jobs — including teachers — closing seven schools, reorganizing departments and dropping those adminstrators and classroom instructors involved in the cheating scandal under the watch of former schools superintendent Beverly Hall. Grady Class of 2012 Readies for Graduation

Grady High School’s graduation is set for Thursday, May 24 at the Atlanta Civic Center. The Class of 2012 valedictorian is Julia Rapoport, and the salutatorian is Shaun Kleber. Druid Hills Soccer Players Named to All Star Team

DeKalb All Star Game set for Saturday, May 19

Members of the boys and girls Druid Hills High School soccer teams were selected to play in the Inside the Perimeter DeKalb All Star Game. Students selected include Indigo Gordon, Jane Neiswander, Haley Landis, Heather Mase, Daniel Samuel, Sol Samuel, Jesus Perez, Julian Rugel and Austin Weatherly. Both the girls and boys all star games are set for Saturday, May 19, at Silverbacks Park, 3200 Atlanta Silverbacks Way in Tucker. The girls will take the field at 11 a.m. followed by the boys at 12:30 p.m. Admission to the game is $10. Soccer Playoffs: Paideia Advances to Final Four

Pythons defeat Hebron Christian

The Paideia School Pythons defeated Hebron Christian Academy 5-1 Friday night in the Class A boys state soccer quarterfinals. Paideia knocked off Hebron in front of a home crowd at Python Park in Avondale Estates, securing a Final Four berth and drawing one step closer to uncharted territory: a state championship. The Pythons had been absent from the second round of the playoffs since 2008, but advanced the the final four in 2011. Paideia will face Atlanta International School in the final four on Tuesday, May 15. The winner of the game will compete for the Class A state title. The horrible calls against AIS, were coincidentally, at critical moments that literally handed goals to Paideia. Paideia should work on actually scoring goals without the ref's help. Soccer Playoffs: Paideia Hosts Hebron Chr. in Elite 8 Friday

Pythons host Hebron Friday

The Paideia School Pythons will play Hebron Christian Academy on Friday in the second round of the boys soccer state playoff tournament. Paideia advanced to the Elite 8 of tournament play with a decisive 6-1 victory over Mt. Paran on Tuesday. Paideia lost to The Walker School Wolverines in the final four of the tournament last season. Paideia Teams Lose to Amherst in Ultimate Tourney

Lady Pythons fall 15-5 in semifinals

The Paideia School girls’ ultimate team lost to Amherst in the semifinals of the Amherst tournament on Sunday, May 6. The Pythons fell 15-5 to Amherst at the 21st Annual Amherst Invitational, one of the most competitive high school competitions in the country. Both the Amherst girls and boys team went on to win the tournament. The Paideia boys’ team lost to Amherst 15-6 in pool play. The Pythons had defeated Amherst just two weeks prior at home. Grady High Ranked Among America’s Best Schools

Grady ranked No. 19 in the state

U.S. News and World Report ranked Grady High School among America’s best high schools in a report released this week. Grady was ranked No. 19 in the state of Georgia and No. 1,204 in the nation. Students from Virginia-Highland, Poncey-Highland, Morningside, Midtown, Inman Park, Candler Park and Old Fourth Ward, among many other Northeast Atlanta neighborhoods attend the award-winning high school.
