Longtime Midtown area business heading across town

Oriental Designer Rugs is moving to the westside's home décor and furnishings district after a nearly two-decade run in the Amsterdam Walk district.

An Amsterdam Walk business for almost two decades is in its final weeks at its current locale before relocating to Atlanta’s westside. Oriental Designer Rugs has been in business for 29 years, the last 19 at 560-A Amsterdam Avenue. But due in part to its expanding rug collection, come February 1, its new showroom will be located at 1250-B Menlo Drive off Huff Road near other designer/decorator home furnishing stores. The new location will be 150 percent larger for the direct importer-wholesaler-retailer that carries rugs from around the world, including machine-loomed rugs made in USA as well as other countries. A store representative told Patch Thursday that merchandise is already being moved across town, but in the meantime, the current …

The belt line is the best thing Atlanta has done in awhile. There is no evidence of crime in that area and it provides a safe place for children and families, singles , everyone to walk and ride bikes safely. Took a great walk yesterday Try it, you may like it. The west side is home to many designers and it makes sense to be surrounded by other designer showrooms. There is a hodgepodge of stuff …   more ›

K-5 School Prepares to Open in Amsterdam Walk

Midtown International School is scheduled to open in August 2013.

A new K-5 school is targeting an August 2013 opening in a warehouse space at the Amsterdam Walk shopping district near the corner of Monroe Drive and Amsterdam Avenue. Midtown International School (MIS) is being planned and designed for students who “learn best in very small class environments, with exposure to a globally-minded curriculum and variety of instructional strategies.” Foreign language instruction, dedicated math and science teachers, and commitment to 21st century learning at MIS will provide an "exceptional foundation for bright young learners to succeed in school and in life" according to school organizers and founder Ande Noktes. Noktes is the executive director of the established International Preschools, which has two …

Residents Blast Amsterdam Walk Clamor

Some dozen area residents came to a meeting to push one of Amsterdam Avenue's busiest tenants to do something about the traffic and rowdy concert-goers that are clogging their neighborhood.

Some dozen area residents met to complain to one of Amsterdam Avenue's busiest tenants about the traffic and rowdy concert-goers that accumulate in their neighborhood, especially on weekends. Loca Luna owner Eric Kline organized what he called in an e-mail a community meeting that "identifies constructive solutions for neighborhood concerns." The concerns of the neighbors who went to the Tuesday night meeting at Park Tavern are the quantity and behavior of Loca Luna patrons, where they leave their cars, and lack of city law enforcement. "I feel like I have no rights. Loca Luna apparently has all the rights," said Wendy White, who lives off Amsterdam Avenue. She took pictures of an ambulance blocked out of Amsterdam Avenue because cars were…

I'm so happy to see that this problem is being taken care of. I don't personally live on Amsterdam Walk but everytime I come down there I cringe at the thought of trying to get out of there. WHY don't the police officers write more tickets for those illegally parked???? It's like shooting fish in a barrel. I'd hate to imagine someone in dire need at the times of mass traffic gridlock here. If …   more ›
