News Nearby: Drew Charter Breaks Ground on High School

Gov. Nathan Deal says the Atlanta charter school is great example for other schools to emulate.

  EAST LAKE — Dignitaries gathered on the back nine of the Charlie Yates Golf Course Tuesday for the ceremonial turning of the the dirt on construction of Charles R. Drew Senior Academy. The groundbreaking brings to fruition a long-held dream for a K-12 educational institution under the Drew Charter School banner. Gov. Nathan Deal, a longtime supporter of the school, noted that Drew's 6th through 8th grade classes rank No. 1 in math and language arts tests among their peers in the Atlanta Public Schools. Drew also is No. 1 statewide out of 301 primary schools and 134 middle schools that have a majority student population of low-income black kids, Deal said. Do You Support The Charter Schools Amendment?

On Nov. 6, voters will decide if the state of Georgia can create charter schools, or will those decisions remain at the local levels.

In less than two weeks, voters will decide if Georgia can create a state commission authorizing charter schools. The issue has stirred controversy all across metro Atlanta. Some Democratic leaders are calling the ballot biased and misleading. Others, however, are reaching across political aisles to support the amendment. On Saturday, Oct. 27, two state lawmakers - one Republican, the other a Democrat - are headlining a rally in support of the amendment. State Sen. Jason Carter, who represents some of Decatur under the Gold Dome, is outspoken in his opposition to the measure. State Sen. Jason Carter Opposes Charter School Amendment

The state senator representing Decatur says politicians are manipulating the system to change the state constitution.

State Sen. Jason Carter says he opposes the charter school amendment on the Nov. 6 ballot--but not because he's against charter schools. Carter, the state senator representing Decatur, complains in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's "Get Schooled" blog that politicians are using ballot questions to subvert the process of changing the state constitution. He says, This manipulation demonstrates that our constitutional amendment process is broken because it allows politicians to put whatever they want on the ballot—with no oversight to prevent abuse.
