Group Seeking Druid Hills Charter Cluster Meets Tuesday

The group wants to turn Druid Hills High School and its feeder schools into a charter cluster.

A committee studying the possibility of a charter cluster that would include Druid Hills High School and its feeder schools will meet Tuesday. In addition to the high school, the Druid Hills Charter Cluster would include Druid Hills Middle School and Avondale, Briar Vista, Fernbank, Laurel Ridge and McLendon elementary schools. Why start a "charter cluster?" From the group's Facebook page: The Druid Hills High School cluster of schools currently is exploring the potential benefits of petitioning to become a "charter cluster" of schools. Charter schools are public schools and receive all the funding that non-charter schools receive, but two words distinguish them from public schools as they exist today: autonomy and flexibility. A charter…

Druid Hills Coach: Olympics Decision to Cut Wrestling is a 'Wakeup Call'

Changes have to come to the sport of wrestling, local coach says.

The International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to remove wrestling didn't come as a surprise to Druid Hills High School wrestling coach Mark Adams. "Wrestling has become a popular scapegoat among sports at all levels," Adams said. "We've taken a beating on Title IX; we've taken a beating because we're a non-revenue-generating sport. It's not surprising to be a target again." The IOC agreed to pare down the 26 sports it features to 25 so that a new sport could join the lineup in 2020. Wrestling has a chance to make it back into the Olympics, but the Los Angeles Times said that was unlikely now that it has been cut. "Wrestling doesn't draw great crowds, and its methods of scoring are complicated," Adams said. "It's not easy to follow…

GHP is a wonderful program. I participated in it in the early 1990's and I made friends for life....and learned a lot too. It seemed like it was longer than four weeks though.   more ›

Druid Hills Boys, Girls Lose to Decatur HS

Decatur Bulldogs start off season with a strong showing in the Tip-Off Classic.

The Tuesday night game between the boys from Decatur High and Druid Hills featured a stop-start tempo throughout. The game had a total of 48 personal fouls along with four technicals. But Decatur prevailed with depth and won, 48-44. The team's second straight win in the Decatur Tip-Off Classic came against a very athletic and much larger opponent playing in a higher classification. Druid Hills, which went 17-8 last year, is a AAAAAA school while Monday’s quicksilver foe, Arabia Mountain, is AAAAA. Decatur got 14 points from 6-0 junior point guard Adarius “Put” Lucas, who also delivered a superlative no-look pass to Cordele Jackson for a basket with 1:20 left giving Decatur the lead for good, 43-42. “Pat saved us,” said Decatur coach …

Druid Hills High Closes Annex

On Friday, Druid Hills High closed its annex at the Dekalb School of the Arts.

Druid Hills High closed its annex at the DeKalb School of the Arts on Friday. In an email to the PTA, school Principal Mindee Adamson wrote: On Friday, 8/24, the decision was made to close the annex. With Open House at both campuses the following week, I decided to make the announcement face to face starting with the annex on the 28th. Students at the annex were given letters on Wednesday, 8/29,  to take home to their parents in case they were not in attendance at Open House. Tonight, 8/30, I made the announcement to the main campus families who attended Open House. It was important to me that the announcement was made face to face in case parents had questions or concerns. I am excited about the move and that all of our students will be …
