Good Food, Good People: Virginia Highland-Druid Hills Patch Wants Your Restaurant Stories

Send us your stories about how these people make your community stronger, whether it's through their good deeds, hard work, great food, or just their friendly smile.

You know that bursting-at-the-seams rush of excitement you get when you discover a little-known eatery? The kind you can hardly contain to the point where you're texting your friends with still-greasy fingers? We recently received an e-mail in that spirit from a neighbor: An excellent hidden gem found right at our doorstep, Chateau de Saigon, just north of the intersection of Dresden on Buford Hwy (on the left). The restaurant itself is sparsely decorated and sits at the end unit of a small strip mall but the food is excellent, a combination of French and S.E. Asian cuisines. And its affordable. My friend and I ordered two appetizers, two wines and split and entree and the bill was around $40. In case you haven't noticed, we here at …

Manuel's Closed All Day Wednesday For Movie Work

A film crew will take over the watering hole on Wednesday. The tavern will reopen as usual on Thursday.

Regulars of Manuel's Tavern will need to find a new second home on Wednesday. The venerable watering hole will be closed because a movie crew leased the building for the entire day. A Facebook posting didn't provide the name of the movie and the guy who answered the phone at the bar didn't know either. Manuel's reopens as usual on Thursday. Here's the information Manuel's put on Facebook. No need for alarm or concern. This Wednesday April 24, Manuel's will be closed for one day. We have leased the entire Manuel's property to a movie crew for filming. Being closed and paid for it does not happen often and it allows an opportunity to give all employees a paid day off. This event also gives a little help to the checkbook. This is not an usual…

Steady Hand Pour House Finds New Home

The coffee shop is moving from Emory Village to the Decatur Square.

The Steady Hand Pour House, a coffee house in Emory Village, is relocating to the Iberian Pig on the Court Square in Decatur. The coffee shop owners said they'd pour their last cup in Emory on April 24. Their space is being taken over by Slice & Pint. The coffee shop's opening opens May 1 in Decatur. The Iberian Pig made this annoncement on its Facebook page, first reported by Decatur Metro. We're big fans of The Steady Hand Pourhouse (sic), a fantastic coffee shop in Emory Village. They recently lost their lease, and are looking for a new location. In the meantime, we don't want to face the day without our favorite hometown coffee, so we're teaming up with them to ensure that we -- and Decatur -- get our coffee fix. Starting May 1, Steady…

BurgerFi prides itself on serving hormone-free, grass-fed beef burgers that have never been frozen in a setting that's environmentally friendly.

Tin Lizzy's Opens at Emory Point

Another eatery opens, and developers are looking to start construction on Phase II this summer.

Tin Lizzy's Cantina opened for an eager lunch crowd at the Emory Point development on Friday. Dave Schrader, who has overseen construction and the opening, said the restaurant, which seats 180, had to put people on a waiting list for its first lunch service. "We had an amazing lunch," he said. "Very smooth." The Mexican restaurant and sports bar is the latest eatery to open in the mixed-use development on Clifton Road, across from the Centers for Disease Control and just down the street from Emory University. Schrader said he's not worried about competition from the other eateries in the residential-retail development. "Not with the CDC and potential growth in the area ... Emory Hospital, Emory University..." Two more restaurants are …

Manuel's Owner Thanks Customers for Support Despite Price Increases

Poncey-Highland eatery follows trend of raising menu prices to cover costs.

Several weeks after announcing it had to raise menu prices, the owner of Manuel's Tavern thanked his customers for their loyalty and support. "I want to thank everyone for the kind words and support for our open letter," owner Brian Maloof wrote on the venerable Poncey-Highland eatery's Facebook page. "The love shown by you has brought tears of joy and comfort to my mind. For the first time in a 6 months I did not feel alone in the struggle to secure the continuation of Manuel's." The note of heartfelt thanks follows the restaurant's Feb. 28 announcement that market conditions left him with no alternative but to raise prices. The changing landscape was so great that the restaurant, which normally would absorb those costs, could no longer …
