Survey Shows Morningside Residents Want More Nature Trails

Volunteers continue to draft plans to connect two large nature preserves

By Sally Sears An large majority of Morningside and Virginia-Highland neighbors want more access to hiking trails close to home. Preliminary results of a survey underway for Park Pride show 74-percent of the community agrees that access to more trails is needed. The answers encourage volunteers seeking to connect two large nature preserves with low-impact trails on public land along the South Fork of Peachtree Creek. Park Pride Visioning leaders Walt Ray and Jesse Allen released the numbers yesterday, noting that 175 people took the survey, with the majority living in Morningside/Lenox Park. Creek cleanups and trail building are expected later in the spring. Here’s what one avid creek paddler found on a cleanup downstream from Cheshire Bridge Road. From …

So they are just talking about a dirt trail? Well it's a start. Would be awesome someday if PATH could come in a pave it and connect it to the 400 trail that's going to be built and the Beltline trails. Would be an awesome shortcut from Lindbergh to Morningside/Highlands on a bike!   more ›

Druid Hills Ready For ‘Visioning’ on Newly Acquired Parcels

Playground, habitat likely on Ridgewood and Vickers drives

Druid Hills is not resting on its laurels – especially not the invasive cherry laurel -- when it comes to parks and green space but is moving forward to develop two new community spaces on Ridgewood and Vickers drives. Since DeKalb County voters’ approval of bonds for green space acquisition 2001 and 2006, Druid Hills Civic Association (DHCA) has been working to help the county identify, acquire and now develop new playground and parks. Their labors are bearing fruits, said Druid Hills Civic Association president Bruce MacGregor. In the past few months, the county has purchased property on Vickers and Ridgewood drives and cleared the buildings from the property. “Our goal is to explore all options for new playgrounds and parks,” said Becky…
