School News: Calendar Meeting at Inman Middle, Grady Wins Grant for Street Art

Parents will have a chance to weigh in on school calendars for the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years at a Jan. 28 meeting at Inman Middle.

  In March, the Atlanta Board of Education will take action on the district calendars for the next two school years (2013-14 and 2014-2015). Parents can learn more about the proposed calendars and offer input at a public meeting from 5:30-7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28 at Inman Middle School. School officials began work on the new calendar at the start of the current school year, gathering data through a survey that gathered public input. See here for more information. Atlanta Public Schools Set to Enforce One-Mile Walk Zones

Elementary school students that live within one-mile of school will no longer have access to bus transportation

Atlanta Public Schools elementary school students that live within one-mile of school will no longer be able to ride the bus to the schoolhouse. In an effort to save money, the district is enforcing a one-mile walk zone at elementary schools citywide and a 1.5-mile walk zone at middle and high schools. Bus transportation will not be offered to students that live within the walk zone. Instead, these students are encouraged to bike or walk to school. The walk zones have been an established policy at the district for many years, district spokesman Keith Bromery told Patch on Wednesday. Police Top Dog Visits Springdale Park

Councilman Julian Bond swore in Officer McGruff on Career Day

Atlanta’s favorite crime dog paid a visit to Springdale Park Elementary School on Friday. Officer McGruff, the Atlanta Police Department’s anti-crime campaign character, visited Springdale Park on Friday, May 4, as a part of Career Day. Atlanta City Councilman Julian Bond swore in the officer, who was sporting a new look that was donated by Bond in an effort to promote outreach to kids. During Springdale Park Elementary School Career Day, Atlanta Police officers spoke to first and second-graders about a future career as an Atlanta Police Officer and how the students can help the police by staying vigilant in their own communities. Springdale Park Named National Green Ribbon School

Springdale Park Elementary School was named a National Green Ribbon School on Monday for the continuous effort to be environmentally friendly and health conscious. Springdale Park was among 78 schools nationwide to receive the inaugural award. "Science and environmental education play a central role in providing children with a well-rounded education that prepares them for the jobs of the future," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement. "Green Ribbon Schools demonstrate compelling examples of the ways schools can expand their coursework while also helping children build real world skill sets, cut school costs, and provide healthy learning environments." Springdale Park Commended for Being Green

The Druid Hills elementary school one of four schools to represent Georgia in the National Green Ribbon Schools program

Springdale Park Elementary School was among four Georgia schools commended by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle Monday morning for their efforts to be green. Springdale Park, which is located in Druid Hills, and three others were nominated to represent Georgia in the National Green Ribbon Schools contest, launched this year by the U.S. Dept. of Education to award conservation-minded schools. The other Georgia schools are Arabia Mountain High School in DeKalb County, Crabapple Crossing Elementary School in Milton and the Savannah Country Day School. Springdale Park Parents Rally for Neighborhood Schools

Parents demonstrate the importance of walkable schools in the Atlanta Public Schools redistricting debate

Springdale Park Elementary School parents marched to an Atlanta Public Schools redistricting meeting on Thursday at Grady High School. Parents walked to the meeting to show support for walkable neighborhood schools, which has been a hot issue in the Atlanta Public Schools redistricting debate. Groups met at Virginia Avenue and N. Highland Avenue in Virginia-Highland and 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue in Midtown and walked to the meeting at Grady. The Q&A session Thursday night with Atlanta Public Schools board of education members included discussions about alternate middle school configurations and keeping elementary schools kindergarten-through-fifth-grade. Springdale Park Parents Plan Walk to APS Redistricting Meeting

Parents will walk to Grady High on Thursday evening

If you see a large group of parents walking toward Grady High School Thursday night, don’t be alarmed. Springdale Park Elementary School parents plan to walk in groups to a meeting with Atlanta Public Schools board of education members at Grady High School Thursday night. The meeting — which is hosted by the Council of Intown Neighborhoods and Schools — will give parents the opportunity to talk directly with board members about the latest redistricting proposals released in late January. Parents plan to meet at the corner of N. Highland Avenue and Virginia Avenue around 5:30 p.m. A second meet-up spot is planned for 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue for parents coming from Midtown neighborhoods. Local Schools Honored for High Achievement

Springdale Park, Morningside, Mary Lin named among others in district

A handful of local schools were cited this week by the Governor's Office of Academic Achievement for high performance in the last two years on the Critereon Referenced Competency Test. Schools cited in the "Highest Performance" category included: "Mary Lin is a community that thrives on parent involvement and on fundraising. Both are essential in making a quality school," said Alex Coffman, Mary Lin Parent Teacher Association president.
