Georgia Tech professor gets grant to create database of Atlanta streets.
Take a walk on a number of streets in Virginia-Highland, and you'll notice the deplorable condition and dangers they pose to pedestrians and joggers, dads pushing strollers or those with physical handicaps. The neighborhood's sidewalk problem — chronicled last year in a Virginia-Highland—Druid Hills Patch special report — isn't lost on Randall Guensler, who lives in the community and is a professor at Georgia Tech in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Historic building at Ponce de Leon Avenue and North Highland Avenue is getting a multi-million dollar facelift.
The Portland, Maine-based real estate concern that purchased the Briarcliff Summit last year for a multi-million dollar renovation, says the refurbishing, which started in September of 2012, is proceeding as planned. "The renovations are happening and are going smoothly," Nick Bouquet, a development associate with Evergreen Partners LLC, told Virginia-Highland—Druid Hills Patch. "The project is on schedule." Evergreen purchased the iconic building at 1050 Ponce de Leon Ave. last year with a muti-pronged plan to renovate it. The 200-unit apartment building opened in 1925 as a luxury rental complex on Ponce, then one of Atlanta's most fashionable streets. It now provides Section 8 housing to the elderly. Change is part of overall series of improvements to Ponce corridor.
Ponce de Leon Avenue will lose a lane in both directions between the Boulvevard/Monroe Drive and Freedom Parkway intersections, according to a BeltLine improvement plan. The remaining two lanes will be widened and the plan also will include a center lane for turns and some pedestrian islands, according to a report by the Virginia-Highland Civic Association. The plan also calls for bike lanes from Ponce and the Boulevard/Monroe Drive intersection to Ponce de Leon Place. Those lanes will be buffered by one- to two-foot-wide traffic barriers, the report said. There was no immediate start date, but the city expects it to be finished in the summer. Meeting to include a presentation on John Howell Park and ten zoning issues
Neighborhood Planning Unit-F, which includes Virginia-Highland, Morningside, Piedmont Heights and Lindridge Martin Manor, is set to meet Monday night. The group will discuss ten varience applications and one change of ownership for a liquor license off Cheshire Bridge Road. Led by St Charles Ave. west end Street Captain Mike Boyle, and joined by Safety Chair John Wolfinger, power washer extraordinaire Jimmy Lee and highly capable volunteers David Berl, David Binkney, and Todd Matthews, the 755 Apartment Building got its much-needed makeover. With a fence soon to be erected by the owner, this property should remain clean and no longer be a magnet for taggers on the alley. Local restaurants battle for top burger praise
Burger connoisseurs in Atlanta are gearing up for the burger contest of the year in the metro area. Sixteen local restaurants will compete for the honor of best burger on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Battle of the Burgers at John Howell Park in Virginia-Highland. Participating restaurants include American Roadhouse, The Nook, Cypress Street, Taco Mac, Grindhouse, Einsteins, Highland Tap, Deckard's American Tavern, The Warren, Boogie Burger, Kaleidoscope, The Panamaria Grille, There, Midtown Tavern, Hudson Grille and US Cafe. Ten-percent of the days proceeds on Wednesday, August 29 will be donated to the memorial fund
On Wednesday, Aug. 29, Genki Gives will be dedicated to Mike Moloo, owner of the ATL Food Mart at 730 Barnett St., who was shot and killed outside the store during a robbery on Aug. 16. Ten-percent of each check on Wednesday will benefit the family of Mike Moloo. He is survived by his wife and two children. Five trucks were issued citations
Atlanta Police raided the food truck event in Virginia-Highland on Wednesday and issued citations for improper permits. Five trucks were cited, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Each truck must have a license for each specific address they operate from. “It is not a health or safety issue," event organizer Bettie Cagle told the AJC. "These guys are fully permitted and follow all of the health regulation codes. But when you are at an event and the police come and shut it down, there is a lot of speculation, which makes me nervous for the trucks.” Read more on the AJC food blog.
