World AIDS Day is held on December 1st each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988. In recognition of World AIDS Day, Fulton and DeKalb County health agencies will hold events encouraging people to get tested for HIV and AIDS. The events run Nov. 28-Dec. 1, World AIDS Day. They coincide with the World AIDS Campaign, which focuses on “Zero AIDS Related Deaths.” Planned events include: In January 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded a $4.5 million grant to Fulton County to implement high impact HIV prevention programs in both Fulton and DeKalb Counties. The overall goal of the grant is to identify more residents who are HIV infected but are unaware of their status and to link those individuals with medical services and treatment. Ride marks 30th anniversary of AIDS epidemic
A 30-mile bike ride to mark the 30th anniversary of the AIDS epidemic will be held at Emory University this week. The Remembrance Ride will be held on Thursday, Dec. 1, which is also World AIDS Day. The ride is co-sponsored by Action Cycling and the Emory Vaccine Center. A reception will be held after the ride to recognize the progress made in developing a vaccine for AIDS and HIV.
