Bicycle Lanes Coming to Portion of Ponce de Leon Avenue
Change is part of overall series of improvements to Ponce corridor.
Ponce de Leon Avenue will lose a lane in both directions between the Boulvevard/Monroe Drive and Freedom Parkway intersections, according to a BeltLine improvement plan. The remaining two lanes will be widened and the plan also will include a center lane for turns and some pedestrian islands, according to a report by the Virginia-Highland Civic Association. The plan also calls for bike lanes from Ponce and the Boulevard/Monroe Drive intersection to Ponce de Leon Place. Those lanes will be buffered by one- to two-foot-wide traffic barriers, the report said. There was no immediate start date, but the city expects it to be finished in the summer. While I am excited about the bike lane project on Ponce de Leon Ave, I am very concerned about losing a lane on both sides. If you have passed by Ponce by the McDonald near the Monroe Drive you must have seen cars backed up on the eastbound because of the cars trying to make left turn into McDonalds.
