News Nearby: Good Growth DeKalb Sues to Stop Walmart

The group claims its appeal of a construction permit for the project on North Decatur Road was wrongly dismissed by DeKalb County officials.

Good Growth DeKalb, the group fighting the construction of a Walmart Supercenter in North Decatur, sued DeKalb County on Friday for granting the international retail giant a construction permit. The suit, filed in DeKalb County Superior Court, contends that the county violated its own ordinances when it heard the group's administrative appeal of the permit issuance in January with the Zoning Board of Appeals rather than the Technical Board of Appeals, which Good Growth DeKalb claims is required by county law. The county does not currently have a Technical Board of Appeals. At the February hearing, attorneys with Good Growth DeKalb also said county ordinances related to trucking, trees and hydrology were not followed when the permit was …

My thank to Good Growth Dekalb for fighting this. We do NOT need the kind of people that Walmart would bring into our neighborhoods.   more ›

So the agency's has launched a $12 million campaign that includes the purchase of a graffiti-covered cluster of buildings in Reynoldstown, at 824 Memorial Drive, at the northwest corner of Chester Avenue. Atlanta Habitat is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity …

I do think the Habitat does important work and is good at it. However, it seems to me that $12 million dollars for a move into a new location is excessive. Perhaps it includes a lot more than just buying and refurbishing the buildings?   more ›

The small city bordering Druid Hills is looking to expand its borders.

The Decatur City Commission meets Monday, Dec. 17, and will decide whether to move ahead with annexation. Merriss recommended Decatur annex the two heavily commercial areas on the northeast and northwest corners of the city limits. Even if the commission votes yes, there will be many more steps in…

Could not disagree with you more. While the food is expensive, I have found few other places in Atlanta that manages to have top service, great atmoshere and exquisite food. It is no wonder that when so many restaurants come and go in Atlanta that Bacchanalia has survived for as long as it has.
