Monday murder of a former Grady High student outside a Ponce de Leon Avenue apartment complex comes as transitioning area continues to try to distance itself from a reputation as being a home for criminal activity
On Tuesday while area residents were left speculating as to why a local man was gunned down Monday afternoon outside a Poncey-Highland apartment complex, others were left still believing the Ponce de Leon Avenue corridor will succeed in its evolving urban gentrification in the face of some recent violent crime. Lee Lowery III was shot and killed by a lone gunman shortly after 5 p.m. Monday while attempting to visit the Ford Factory Lofts, located in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood next to the Ponce City Market development. Late Monday morning, Atlanta police released this video showing the moments that led to the fatal shooting of the 20-year-old young man in the breezeway of the apartments. Witnesses say thief tried to smash car window
A person attempted to steal a backpack on Friday from a car parked at Alon’s Bakery in Morningside, according to witnesses. The person tried to break a back window of a car with a rock and take a child's backpack in the back seat, according to an e-mail sent to the community. The attempt was unsuccessful and the person fled from the parking lot. “This exemplifies the need to keep parked cars cleaned out at all times, even in busy parking lots,” Virginia-Highland safety chair John Wolfinger said in an e-mail to residents. The Clean Car Campaign, organized by the Atlanta Police Department, also reminds residents to remove all valuable items from cars to avoid car break-ins. Although some residents say they don’t feel safe in their neighborhood, statistics show that crime is down in most of northeast Atlanta. Crime in the Morningside-Lenox Park beat is down 11-percent, but there seems to be an uptick in robberies and stolen property compared to this time last year. In the Lindridge-Martin Manor and Piedmont Heights beat, crime is down 20-percent, but residents in the neighborhoods are seeing a slight increase in auto thefts and …
